Game 21: Yankees vs. Tigers

April 29, 2012, 1:05 p.m. ET, Yankee Stadium, Bronx, N.Y.
TV / Radio: YES/TBS, WCBS 880 AM

With the news that Freddy Garcia has been sent to the Yankees’ bullpen, the relievers out there are looking for CC Sabathia to give them a little more distance than the 1 2/3 innings Garcia provided yesterday against the Tigers. D.J. Mitchell is on the staff just in case, but Joe Girardi would certainly welcome a deep outing from his ace, who is again paired with not-personal-catcher Chris Stewart.

“If your starters give you length, you’re in the game,” Girardi said. “I would love to get a good seven or eight strong innings out of CC.”

The Tigers send out Max Scherzer, he of the heterochromatic eyes — one brown and one blue. Scherzer is coming off a 15-win season for Detroit and is making the fourth regular season start of his career against the Yankees, earning the win in all three of his previous outings. He held New York scoreless in two of those games. Scherzer was 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA (1 ER in 7.1 IP) vs. the Yankees in last year’s playoffs.
