Game 19: Yankees vs. Tigers

April 27, 2012, 7:05 p.m. ET, Yankee Stadium, Bronx, N.Y.
TV / Radio: YES/MLB Network, WCBS 880 AM

It’s a chilly one here in the Bronx — game time temperature 46 degrees — as the Yankees kick off this homestand with a look at the Detroit Tigers. And who wouldn’t want to face Justin Verlander on a night like this? He’s a lot more than just the guy who gets tossed out of the perfect game club by Kate Upton in the video game commercial.

“He’s got four plus pitches and his fastball can be anywhere from 92, 93 to 100 miles an hour tonight with movement,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It seems like when he struggles it’s early in the game. If you get those opportunities you cannot miss them. Once he seems to find his rhythm he can be really, really good.”

Verlander has won his last two starts coming in and is making his fourth career start at Yankee Stadium, where he’s 0-2 with a 4.00 ERA in 18 innings. The Yankees are looking for Ivan Nova to keep on doing his thing, which is, of course, winning.

Nova has won 15 straight decisions dating back to June 10, and with one more, he’ll tie Roger Clemens’ 2001 string of 16 for the most consecutive winning decisions in franchise history. Still, if there was anyone who could break up a super string like that, it might be Verlander and the Tigers.

Here are the lineups:

Miguel Cabrera 3B
Prince Fielder 1B

It might have been ugly but I’ll take the W.
