Game 10: Yankees vs. Twins

April 16, 2012, 7:05 p.m. ET, Yankee Stadium, Bronx, N.Y.
TV / Radio: YES/ESPN, WCBS 880 AM

The Twins are in town for the Yankees’ first four-game series of the season, kicking off Monday. The Bronx has been particularly unkind to the Twins during manager Ron Gardenhire’s tenure (since 2002). In that time, the Twins are 18-51 overall against the Bronx Bombers, and just 5-28 here in New York. Minnesota went 3-25 in New York from May 17-2002-May 15, 2010 but has managed to go 2-3 in the last five.

Freddy Garcia makes his Bronx debut tonight for New York. He took a no-decision in his season debut — 4/10 at Baltimore — after allowing four runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings of work, but threw five wild pitches.

“Just his command to be better,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of what New York needs from Garcia on Monday night. “And I expect it will be. I thought his start the other day was very uncharacteristic of Freddy. But, in saying that, with all the struggles he had, he really could have gave up one run, in a sense. Wild pitches came into it, an error came into it. He only gave up four hits.”

Garcia was the first pitcher to throw five wild pitches since Ken Howell in 1989.

The Yankees’ lineup (posted below) features Alex Rodriguez back in the three-hole and Robinson Cano in the cleanup spot. Veteran Carl Pavano, who had four forgettable seasons in pinstripes (he was 9-8 with a 5.00 ERA with the Yankees), gets the start for Minnesota. Pavano is 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA in his career against the Yankees (four starts).

Wade has a poor outing again. Had it all through spring training. Girardi leaves him in anyway. Hitting has dried up since the 1st and making Pavano look like a Cy Young candidate. The Twins certainly look like a better team than their record.

Two bad calls on Swisher at the plate that forced him to try to protect and make a bad swing. Guys on base you got to get them home. That has been a problem too often for the Yankees. When they don’t move the guys on base they end up losing the game.

Freddy has not been sharp again. When Petitte ready and Pineda I would think Freddy will go to the pen along with Hughes. Bats gone cold after the 1st inning. Hitters making Pavano look better than he really is. Yankees need to step it up and soon or they’ll give away the first game of the series and drop to 500 again.

Got to tell you folks I’m NOT buying the Freddy & Hughes combo for the 4th and 5th starters this year. Can’t wait until Andy and Pineda get back into the rotation. Then I’ll feel comfortable about the Yankee starting pitching.

Got it on TV tonight. Hope Freddy has better control tonight and the offence keeps rolling. Time to pull ahead of the pack. The Yankees have always had the Twins number. Hope it works for this series.
