Pineda headed for DL with shoulder tendinitis
The MRI taken on Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda showed right shoulder tendinitis, manager Joe Girardi told reporters in Kissimmee, Fla. this morning.
Pineda will be placed on the 15-day disabled list and the Yankees figure to treat him conservatively, but all things considered this should be taken as good news, considering the worst-case scenarios that were flying around George M. Steinbrenner Field last night.
Freddy Garcia is officially in the Yankees’ rotation and will probably pitch the fifth game of the season, so the spring competition is over. CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda will lead the starting five, followed by Phil Hughes, Ivan Nova and Garcia.
Additionally, left-hander Cesar Cabral has a significant elbow injury and will miss a large amount of time, Girardi said. Cabral had a decent chance of making the roster as a second left-hander; there’s now a good shot for Clay Rapada to be on the roster.
