Spring Game 28: Yankees vs. Phillies

March 30, 2012, 7:05 p.m. ET, George M. Steinbrenner Field, Tampa, Fla.

Is Michael Pineda pitching for his place in the rotation tonight? It’s certainly possible, as the Yankees look to finish up their five-man rotation in the very near future. Freddy Garcia turned in a good start earlier today in a Minor League game and the pressure is on Pineda to prove that he – and not Garcia – would be the best choice to begin the season in the rotation.

CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda have locked up jobs, and Joe Girardi strongly hinted today that Phil Hughes has as well. Ivan Nova’s 16-win season last year seems to put him in position to be in the rotation, despite his subpar spring, so a great Pineda start might be all the Yankees need to see. Otherwise, a known quantity in Garcia waits in the wings.

Here are the lineups:

PHILLIES (12-14-3)
Juan Pierre LF
Shane Victorino CF
Jimmy Rollins SS
Jim Thome DH
Hunter Pence RF
Placido Polanco 3B
Ty Wigginton 1B
Carlos Ruiz C
Freddy Galvis 2B

Pitching: Antonio Bastardo RHP (0-0, 4.26 ERA this spring)

YANKEES (13-11-3)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Robinson Cano 2B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Eric Chavez 1B
Russell Martin C
Andruw Jones DH
Justin Maxwell RF
Brett Gardner LF

Pitching: Michael Pineda RHP (1-0, 3.31 ERA this spring)

At least the bats came alive tonight. Gives us more hope for the start of the regular season. Unfortunate about Pineda. Let’s hope it’s a minor and short term injury. it could mean that Garcia is now locked into the rotation.

Hate to say it, but not the most convincing start if he needed to audition for the 5th starters slot!
