Spring Game 12: Yankees vs. Red Sox

March 13, 2012, 7:05 p.m. ET, George M. Steinbrenner Field, Tampa, Fla.

Don’t expect to be seeing Derek Jeter dive into the stands tonight, but the Yankees and the Red Sox renew their classic rivalry for the first time in 2012 here at The Boss. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of reception Bobby Valentine gets here, just a few weeks removed from taking a couple of old-news swipes at Jeter’s flip play (really?) and Alex Rodriguez’s dust-up with Jason Varitek. My guess? I know you’ll be surprised at this, but not a very welcome one.

Here are the lineups, which could change depending on how Eduardo Nunez feels following batting practice.

RED SOX (6-2)
Mike Aviles SS
Dustin Pedroia 2B
Jacoby Ellsbury DH
Jarrod Saltalamacchia C
Will Middlebrooks 3B
Lars Anderson 1B
Juan Carlos Linares CF
Josh Kroeger RF
Alex Hassan LF

Pitching: LHP Felix Doubront (0-0, 9.00 ERA this spring)

YANKEES (5-6)
Brett Gardner CF
Russell Martin C
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Raul Ibanez DH
Andruw Jones RF
Eduardo Nunez SS
Bill Hall 2B
Jayson Nix LF
Doug Bernier SS

Pitching: RHP Ivan Nova (0-1, 11.57 ERA this spring)
Also available for the Yankees: Mariano Rivera RHP, David Phelps RHP, Boone Logan LHP, Clay Rapada LHP, Cory Wade RHP.

UPDATE: Nunez scratched after feeling discomfort during BP. He wanted to play but the Yankees told him to rest instead. Joe Girardi said they’ll try again in a couple more days. Bernier is in at shortstop.

close – west coast of Scotland!

case in point, bats heating up today but pitching getting mashed – like i said, just gotta accept that fortunately these games mean jack when it comes to the real business.

Allan: Where are you located? Did I remember right from last year you are in England somewhere? Anyway, appreciate what you’re saying. Pitching great last night but the offence has really been off this spring training. I hope it doesn’t carry into the regular season. The Jays look hot offensively this spring season. They’re going to be a tough team to beat I think.

Spring Training means nothing, lets not forget the fact that the contenders very rarely wind up with season like records – need i remind you that Kansas City topped the AL spring training standings in 2011 while the Cards were 14-16! If they’re still struggling to square them up in 5 weeks then i’ll worry – but until then it’s not worth worrying about so far. Besides, the Red Sucks scored on a double error by two young minor leaguers – i’d be worried if Nova was touched up for 5 runs in 2 innings but he threw 4 scoreless on 2 hits, Logan & Mo got an inning of work in without much hassle too. Yeah the bats are quiet just now but that happens, pitching is the key to the kingdom and last night we proved ours is reasonably solid.

The Yankees have stunk offensively in spring training. A record of 5-7 is not something to be proud of. I know it’s only spring training, but look at the Blue Jays record and the Red Sox. The Sox didn’t hit tonight either. Unfortunately Almonte, who has a good spring training, really gaffed on the blooper in front of him and then threw the ball off line committing two errors on the one play. That’s the only run the Sox got. But it was enough to put another win in the win column and another loss in the Yankees loss column. Neither the vets playing tonight or the rookies could hit the ball. They really looked flat at the plate to me. I would have some concern if I were Girardi if they don’t get this turned around. Tex has been doing nothing. And Cano and Grandy haven’t been great either. If George were around he’d be lighting a fire under someone even in spring training. He hated to lose especially to the Red Sox.

Sore loss tonight! Sorry to say it but i was one advocating perhaps using Jorge Vazquez as a platoon DH but it would appear this spring he’d struggle to hit water if he fell out a boat, shame given the way he tore up pitching last spring.
