Banuelos starts the day off

Manny Banuelos was already on the mound when I walked into Steinbrenner Field this morning, firing live batting practice to Minor Leaguers in front of a group of coaches that included pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

The Yankees are getting their pitchers going a little ahead of schedule, as Joe Girardi was saying yesterday afternoon, because of the exhibition schedule that is quickly approaching.

“We have some guys that are ready for that, because they’ve been here for a while and they have been throwing,” Girardi said. “We have some games that are fairly early so we’ve moved up their bullpens to try to prepare those guys for games.”

Today marks the Yankees’ first full-squad workout of the spring, and Alex Rodriguez will hold his spring kickoff news conference following the workout. We’ll be back with more tidbits and hopefully some photos later in the day.
