This is your Captain speaking

Derek Jeter will meet the media at 9:45 a.m. today for his spring kickoff news conference. Unlike last year, when Jeter’s contentious contract negotiations were the primary focus, there’s no hot topic for Jeter to swat away like so many fastballs over the years.

He has already said he knows what Mariano Rivera is doing, but he isn’t saying, and there’s no reason to believe that will change here today at Steinbrenner Field.

Fearless predictions: Jeter probably thinks the Yankees look good on paper but will wait to see how it all plays out, is going to miss Jorge Posada’s presence both at the ballpark and away from it, and definitely wants to win another World Series championship because anything less is a disappointment. That’s probably pretty close, right?

Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira and Brett Gardner were among the position players who popped into the clubhouse this morning. Today is just a report date, so players really just need to be in the Tampa city limits by nightfall. Tomorrow is the first full-squad workout.

The pitchers and catchers in camp are getting a light day today, taking a break before the big workouts begin. There are no scheduled bullpens, and the rehabbing position players in camp aren’t taking BP.

Here are the hitting groups, sparse as they may be:

Group 1: Kyle Higashioka, J.R. Murphy, Gary Sanchez.
Group 2: Francisco Cervelli, Russell Martin, Gustavo Molina.
