Quick hits: Hughes ready for relief work

  • It sounds like the Yankees would like to get Phil Hughes in tonight as a reliever, and then pitch him on Wednesday as well. Joe Girardi said that Hughes “just wants to help, and I love that attitude.” It’s unknown if Hughes would be able to pitch on back-to-back days in the playoffs, but he’s not going to be disrupting the current bullpen alignment – Girardi said the pecking order is safe.
  • In addition to A.J. Burnett and Freddy Garcia, Girardi said he hasn’t ruled out Bartolo Colon to make a potential playoff start. He wants to see Colon’s last outing of the season.
  • Wednesday’s starter is still TBA, and it could wind up being a bullpen day, with the more inexperienced pitchers getting work. Girardi said not having two off days before the playoff starts puts him in a pickle.
  •  The Yankees are having a meeting tomorrow to go over their pitching decisions, including whether to take 12 pitchers or 11.
  • Francisco Cervelli tried throwing and catching, and his concussion symptoms returned. He’s headed back to New York for more testing. At this point, it would be a very big surprise if his season wasn’t over.
  • Hector Noesi could be asked to throw 70-80 pitches tonight.
