Mariano Rivera: “Nobody gave us a shot”
Remember in Spring Training when the Red Sox were the toast of the Grapefruit League and the Yankees were being considered the favorites for a Wild Card?
Even general manager Brian Cashman was saying that the Red Sox looked a whole lot better on paper, pointing to their superior starting rotation, calling them the favorites for the American League East.
Mariano Rivera hasn’t forgotten, apparently, bringing up the slights unsolicited in his remarks following the playoff-clinching 4-2 win over the Rays.
“It’s tremendous to me and for the team,” Rivera said. “It’s a tremendous accomplishment because nobody gave us opportunities. Nobody gave us a shot when we were in Spring Training. Here we are. Not only that, a lot of big guys went down and whoever stepped up, did the job.”
