Girardi intrigued by reliever Raul Valdes

The Yankees used a real Johnny Wholestaff alignment to get this 4-2 win over the Rays in Game 1, calling on seven relievers behind 2 2/3 innings from spot starter Hector Noesi.

Of those seven, manager Joe Girardi said he was intrigued most by Raul Valdes, who got four outs after Noesi, scattering a hit while walking one and striking out three.

“I thought Valdes did a pretty good job,” Girardi said. “The last two times that we’ve used him, he’s done a pretty good job for us. He’s got a little funk to him. There’s something about his windup that looks like the ball kind of jumps at you, and we’ll use him more.”

Valdes has made just two appearances with New York since being claimed off waivers on Aug. 16 from the Cardinals, and would be a long shot to make the postseason roster. But you never know.
