Game 153: Yankees vs. Rays

Hello once again from Yankee Stadium, where it has turned into a cool and pleasant evening and the Yankees are welcoming the Tampa Bay Rays to town for four games in three days. It gets started tonight with Wade Davis and Ivan Nova facing off.

Some quick updates for you:

  • It looks like Francisco Cervelli may have played his final game this season. Joe Girardi acknowledged that he isn’t sure when Cervelli could come back, since he is still feeling concussion symptoms.

  • Isn’t it funny that the Red Sox (and their fans) may spend much of this week rooting for the Yankees to take care of business against Tampa Bay?

“I’ll bet they are,” Mariano Rivera said. “It doesn’t matter. We still have to do our job. It doesn’t matter if they’re pulling for us or not. We still have to do our jobs. I definitely know they’re pulling for us.”

  • The tentative plan is to have Phil Hughes start tomorrow’s first game, assuming he’s OK after his bout with back spasms. CC Sabathia would start the night game.

  • Prior to Tuesday’s game, Medal of Honor recipient Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyers threw out the ceremonial first pitch. The first living Marine to receive a Medal of Honor for actions in Afghanistan, Meyers received the award at a White House ceremony on Sept. 15 for his heroic efforts during battle on Sept. 8, 2009 in Ganjgal Valley in which he saved the lives of 13 U.S. Marines and soldiers, in addition to 23 Afghan soldiers.

Put another W on the leftside of the column. Ivan The Man Nova wins #16 and The Grandy Man has 4 RBI’s. Combined with the Sox loss and another game closer to the playoffs. GREAT win for the Yankees and their fans.

Isn’t Jeter having a wonderful night? 3 strike outs.

Yippee? Andino doubles or the O’s in the 8th inning off Pabelbon and three runs score, making it now 7-5 for the 0’s in the 8th. Hopefully they can hang on.

Why is Girardi bringing in Logan to face righties? I thought his specialty is lefties?

Think we have found a young starter in Ivan Nova this year. Has pitched with guts tonight as usual. When this guy gets men on base, he bears down and makes quality pitches. BTW why the *ELL is BUSTnett questioning Girardi pulling him yesterday? He ought to be thanking his manager for continue to start him when most Yankee fans would prefer A Jerk being regulated to mop up roles.

The Sox are desperate. Bringing in Pabelbon in the 8th leading 5-4.

Like

bases loaded and 1 out and another three runners stranded on base for 16 total so far. Strike outs for CAno and Swisher. This guy de la Rosa is really confusing the yankee hitters.

Like

CAno strikes out with bases loaded. Unusual for him. Need to get another couple of run here to solidify lead.

Where would we be without Grandy this year? I’ll tell you where we’d be. We wouldn’t be in first place and we probably wouldn’t be fighting for the wild card either. Tex has hit home runs and driven in over a hundred runs but it’s come in bunches with some real dead spots in between. Hitting for an average of .246? And ARod has been sitting on the bench most of the year.

Like

Jeter as left 6 on base so far tonight and has struck out twice. Maybe he needs a game off. Gardner hasn’t done much better nor has Tex or Arod.

Like

Nova pulled a houdini act in that inning to get 3 outs with the bases loaded and 0 outs. I think he’s done a great job, pitched 6 innings, so don’t try to push it Girardi and spoil a good thing. Time to go to Soriano.

Looks like Nova is in trouble for the first time. He’s done almost 6 innings even if his pitch count is not real high but perhaps time to take him out and hope the pen can limit the damage. Don’t want to lose this game being up 5-0. If the Rays get some momentum going here it could spell trouble.

Like

up to the 6th inning we have left 13 men on base. Not a good statistic but all too common this year. Hopefully that will be corrected in the playoffs or we’ll be lucky to get past the 1st roun.

yankee batting ave’s with runners in scoring position…grandy .243…tex..258..arod …322…cano…315…swisher .250..martin..253…gardner..297….interesting, this is not with 2 outs, but with any 0 outs.. or.1 or 2..

Granderson again…4 rbi’s now…only guy other than Cano that consistently gets runs home…hes unbelievable…good hustle too..

Like

Jeter .246 with risp this year….077 with a runner on second and .114 with runners on second and third…coming into tonite…

Ivan SuperNova…

Yankees have left 8 men on base so far and it’s only the 5th inning. Nova pitching a great game so far. Only 54 pitches to Davis’ 98. If he keeps strong won’t need to go too much into the bull pen tonight and can rest them for the series.

Like

Problem for them is that they’re already into their pen which has been a little bit shaky of late!

Like

4-1 lead over the Sox not a very comfortable lead. Pedroia doubles and Gonzales hits a homer and all of a sudden it’s 4-3. Should be an interesting night.

Right about now i bet there’s a gentleman sitting in a dugout in Boston thinking “man, if i wasn’t already bald this crew would have me tearing my hair out!” – fortunately for the sawx the Yankees so far appear to be doing them a favour of sorts!

Like

Jeter strikes out the last time with bases loaded. Now he grounds into a force out. The “old” Jeter would have driven in a run or two in that situation. Not Mr. Clutch any more.

Like

Why didn’t Swisher get home on Gardner’s fly ball to center. Not deep enough? Swisher is pretty slow on the bases. Can’t lose this opportunity with bases loaded and come up empty.

Like

Gardner driving the pitch count higher. Bases loaded again. Have to come up with some runs here. O’s beating the Sox 4-1 in the 3rd.

Like

this Tampa Bay team is too explosive offensively to coast even with a 4 run lead. Need to keep pressing and getting men on base and getting them home. Hopefully Nova will pitch a strong game.

Like

pitch count getting higher for Davis. Usual Yankee strategy. Get the starter out early and challenge the bull pen.

Like

Derek didn’t do it but Grandy did. Way to go, a bases clearing double. Keep piling it on.

Like

Here we go. Bases loaded. Derek strikes out. Yankees have to get RISP home especially early in the game. Lost opportunities usually come back to hurt you.
