Jesus Montero joins the Yankees

Jesus Montero’s first taste of life in the big leagues will come with the Yankees and the Red Sox facing off at Fenway Park. The Yankees are wasting no time getting their top prospect started, batting him seventh as the DH in Thursday’s series finale.

“This was my dream, to be here with the team,” Montero said. “Now I’m going to do my job, now I’m going to keep working to help us win.”

Montero said that his parents and girlfriend have tickets and will be on hand in Boston as he makes his big league debut.

“This is amazing for me – it’s a great night tonight,” Montero said. “I hope I do everything really good – I just want to help them to win. I’m here to have fun and help them to win, that’s it.”

The Yankees’ other September callups today are: pitchers Lance Pendleton, Scott Proctor and Raul Valdes, infielder Brandon Laird and outfielder Chris Dickerson.

At every Minor League level it has taken him a while to start hitting, so we’ll have to be patient. That’s a tall order for a lot of Yankee fans!!!

haha love the “Pope being DFA’d for Jesus” comment (religious humor generally tickles me thanks to Dad’s line of work as a clergyman!). Gutsy move putting him in the lineup tonight, so long as he keeps the head & does everything he knows what he can do he’ll do just fine.

Funny note from Mike Axisa @ RAB: POPE DFAd for JESUS!
.
Ryan Pope designated for assignment among flurry of moves
By Mike Axisa

Via Mike Ashmore and Mark Feinsand, the Yankees have cleared space on the 40-man roster for Jesus Montero and Scott Proctor by designating Ryan Pope for assignment and placing Justin Maxwell on the 60-day DL. Think about that, Pope got DFA’d for Jesus.

In other news, Chad Jennings and Joel Sherman report that both Lance Pendleton and Raul Valdes have been called up in addition to Brandon Laird, Chris Dickerson, Montero, and Proctor, so the Yankees have plenty of pitching available tonight. Jack Curry says Hector Noesi and Aaron Laffey are next line for a call-up, but they have to wait for the ten-day period to expire before coming back to the bigs. Montero, by the way, is in the lineup tonight. He’s batting seventh as the DH, and has already caught a bullpen session. · (14) ·
