A-Rod scratched from lineup with jammed thumb

NEW YORK — Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup with a jammed left thumb, but believes he will be back in action after just one day off.

Rodriguez said that the injury occurred on Sunday at Target Field against the Twins, when Rodriguez back-handed a Joe Mauer single in the eighth inning of New York’s 3-0 victory.

“It swelled up a little bit,” said Rodriguez. “It’ll probably just be a day.”

Rodriguez said that he iced the thumb on Monday, feeling it swell up as he attended an event for teammate David Robertson’s ‘High Socks for Hope’ charity.

He was seen Tuesday by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad after taking about 24 swings of batting practice on the field Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, cutting his session short due to the discomfort.

Rodriguez said that he told manager Joe Girardi he would be available to pinch-hit or pinch-run against the A’s on Tuesday, but playing defense seems to be out of the question.

“That’s actually the thing that’s the most painful, to put the glove on,” he said.

Sunday marked Rodriguez’s first game back in action at the big league level after having surgery to repair a torn right meniscus, going 0-for-5.

He said that he would try to look at Tuesday’s scratch as a positive, giving him one more day to bounce back.

“The good news is, the knee feels great, the body feels good,” Rodriguez said. “It’s just hopefully a little bump in the road here and we’re on track.”
