Game 103: Yankees vs. Orioles

A.J. Burnett has held opponents to two earned runs or less in 10 of 21 starts this year.

Hello from Yankee Stadium on a humid evening in the Bronx, as the Yankees begin a four-game series with the Orioles tonight, completing their 10-game homestand and featuring a day-night, split-admission doubleheader coming up tomorrow that will have them play all four games within a 48-hour period.

A.J. Burnett gets the nod tonight for New York, making his 22nd start of the season, his 20th career outing vs. Baltimore and his second of the season. He last started on July 23 vs. Oakland, taking the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings, and is winless in his last four starts. But Burnett has good career numbers against the O’s, owning a 12-4 record with a 4.15 ERA in 19 starts.

The Orioles counter with Jeremy Guthrie, who has already run up 14 losses this year — certainly, the sixth-lowest run support in the American League (3.34 runs per game) hasn’t helped Guthrie’s cause. In 14 career starts against the Yankees, he is 3-9 with a 5.66 ERA, and 0-3 with a 6.41 ERA at Yankee Stadium.

Here are tonight’s lineups:

ORIOLES (41-60)
J.J. Hardy SS
Nick Markakis RF
Adam Jones CF
Vladimir Guerrero DH
Derrek Lee 1B
Mark Reynolds 3B
Matt Wieters C
Nolan Reimold LF
Robert Andino 2B

Pitching: Jeremy Guthrie RHP (4-14, 4.33)

YANKEES (61-41)
Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Eric Chavez 3B
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C

Pitching: A.J. Burnett RHP (8-8, 4.21)

This and that: The Yankees have activated RHP Rafael Soriano from the disabled list and have sent LHP Steve Garrison to Double-A Trenton. Joe Girardi said they will work Soriano back into action slowly, meaning Dave Robertson will likely keep picking up the eighth inning, at least for now. … Girardi, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada recalled Hideki Irabu as a good teammate and someone who was welcome in the clubhouse, saying they had been shocked by the news of his sudden passing. Irabu, 42, was found dead on Thursday in Los Angeles from an apparent suicide. … Alex Rodriguez will travel to Tampa next week to continue his rehab, Girardi said.

I would like to dump AJ in the sewer where he can land on Pavano.

Yes R Moulton the same old, same old from AJ. Girardi will brag about he pitched well, 10 K’s etc. but the results are the same. The guy puts the team in a hole early and the Offense has to battle back from behind. Right now IF the playoffs started today and I were Girardi my rotation is CC, Colon and Garcia. AJ and Hughes are NOT dependable at all. Now compare the paystubs of Colon, Garcia, AJ and Hughes and tell me where the Yankees are getting their best value?

The Sox lost tonight and the Yankees have another chance to get closer but by the way this game is going they’ll still be behind 2 1/2. Unfortunately they can’t put a string of wins together. How many series have they swept this year? This is one series they should sweep but probably won’t. They’ve got two tomorrow and it’s tough to win a doubleheader.

Were is everyone? Robert G. you’re not even commenting tonight. Yankees losing 4-0 and Bustnet pitching one of his usual games and the Yankees hitting like they usually hit for him and it doesn’t generate enough emotion to comment?

Everyone hammers Hughes for giving up 2 runs in 6 innings and this guy gives up 3 in 4. And AJ is being paid a lot more money for being the #2 starter. Guthrie is looking like a great pitcher so far tonight. Maybe the Yankees should trade for him even with his American League East record. He’s sure outpitching AJ at this point. And of course the Yankees never give AJ any run support and it looks like tonight is no different.

AJ does what he usually does. 1st inning a walk and a home run. That’s his MO. Too many walks, too many home runs and already we’re down 2-0. Right now I’d trade Bustnett for Guthrie based on what I’ve seen in the 1st 2 innings even with Guthrie’s record. Going forward AJ is not the answer in the rotation. He’s not consistent enough and doesn’t have good control. Noone else wants him given his huge salary.
