Game 102: Yankees vs. Mariners

Phil Hughes is 2-1 with a 3.74 ERA in six career games (three starts) vs. Seattle.

Good afternoon from Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees will wrap up this three-game series with the Mariners, looking to complete a sweep and send Seattle to their (gulp!) 18th straight loss before enjoying an off-day Thursday here in New York.

If there’s any time for the Mariners to snap out of this funk, it might as well come today, with King Felix on the mound. Felix Hernandez has lost his last two starts to the Rangers and Red Sox and hasn’t won since June 24 against Florida, but obviously the Yankees don’t take him lightly.

“He’s definitely been tough on us and he’s the ace of their staff,” Joe Girardi said. “When you go through losing streaks, a lot of times you’ll turn to the ace of your staff to stop it. We’re going to have to find a way to score some runs.”

Phil Hughes gets the ball today for New York, looking to put a sluggish July 22 outing (4.1 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) against the Athletics behind him. It’ll be Hughes’ third start since returning from the disabled list, and his results thus far have been so-so (July 6 at Cleveland), good (July 17 at Toronto) and awful (the A’s game).

“I think it’s important for him to bounce back after the last start,” Girardi said. “He seemed to struggle with his pitches just weren’t crisp the last time like they were in Toronto. I think it’s important for him.”

MARINERS (43-60)
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Brendan Ryan SS
Dustin Ackley 2B
Justin Smoak 1B
Adam Kennedy 3B
Mike Carp LF
Franklin Gutierrez CF
Jack Cust DH
Josh Bard C

Pitching: Felix Hernandez RHP (8-9, 3.47)

YANKEES (61-40)
Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Russell Martin C
Jorge Posada 1B
Eduardo Nunez 3B

Pitching: Phil Hughes RHP (1-2, 9.47)

This and that: The Yankees won’t activate RHP Rafael Soriano until Friday. … 3B Eric Chavez gets the day off after last night’s game. Girardi said they need to be smart with Chavez to keep him healthy. … The Yankees are seeking their seventh sweep of 2011. … How good was LHP CC Sabathia last night? According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only four pitchers since 1920 have allowed one hit or less with 14 strikeouts. Randy Johnson did it six times, and the other names were Steve Carlton (1972), Sandy Koufax (1965) and Warren Spahn (1960). … 1B Mark Teixeira hit his 100th home run as a Yankee in last night’s win vs. Seattle. He becomes the 37th player to reach that milestone for the Yankees.

And don’t forget: RHP Dave Robertson will be guest bartending tonight at Foley’s NY (18 West 33rd Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, adjacent to the Empire State Building) beginning at 7 p.m., raising funds for his High Socks for Hope foundation.

RobertG I am a results type of guy. Not sold on Logan, way too many mistakes in relief for my tastes. As for scouting here In Tulsa, I can tell you one thing, Jimenez pitched for the Rockies AA club here in Tulsa and can he is the REAL Deal, Except I would not pedal Nova to them for him. As I have stated many times here I am NOT a fan of Hughes at all. Send him instead of Nova to the Rockies as part of the package. Nothwithstanding that Hughes did pitch well today against arguably one of the BEST pitchers in the AL. That guy ought to be pitching for a contender NOT this sorry @ss team.

Like

I agree Seek. Shipping Hughes, Joseph, and Montero for Jimenez is OK with me!

I really like Jimenez, but he does kinda have just one great season in his history. And that puts him in the same category as….gulp….Burnett!

Personally, I’m all for including Nova in any trade package for Jimenez. He hasn’t proven himself to be a better pitcher than Hughes at all, not by a long shot. If anything Nova looked a bit inconsistant this year, plus he is far more unproven than Hughes. At least Hughes has won 18 games in his first and so far only season as a full time starter. I’m willing to bet that is why he struggled this season, he’s never thrown so many innings in a season before. Let’s also not forget he played a key role out of the BP the year the Yanks won the WS. frankly, I’m glad this team didn’t trade Hughes away for Santan a few seasons ago. At least Hughes has proven to have had more of an impact than Santana.. nova has done nothing and is still unproven as a pitcher. With Jimenez’s arm it’s well worth the gamble to trade away three prospects for for him.

As for another lefty in the BP, there’s no written rule that says you have to have a lefty specialist just get the best possible arm who can get both lefties and righties out with effective frequency.

Like

I wouldn’t mind seeing JC Romero up and seeing what he can do if this team has to have a lefty specialist.

Like

An upgrade to Hughes from Nova in the package may just turn the trick Matt.

Like

Robert,

I don’t know, the fact that he hasn’t been able to pitch this season due to health issues won’t be lost on other teams, which means his trade value won’t be very high, most likely Nova’s value is higher than Hughes’s right now. So you are most likely going to get better value with Nova.

Robert: Jenning said this before tonight’s poor showing. How many poor showings does he need to convince people that he cannot carry the load of left handed pitching out of the bull pen? This experiment has gone on too long witout anything being done to fix it.

Bob, the results were poor but the pitching wasn’t. Assuming you were on Gameday as usual.

“Pockets of Yankee Stadium currently booing Boone Logan after he faced four hitters, and a ground ball, walk, strikeout and fly ball. The two balls put in play should have been outs — the first might have been a double play — but Robinson Cano made a bad flip and Curtis Granderson let the ball bounce out of his glove.” – Posted by:Chad Jenningson Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

“Don’t let the fact that you gave up on Boone Logan in the first half — or that he misplayed a ball three nights ago — keep you from seeing the fact he’s pitching much better. I know I’m usually a glass-half-full kind of guy, but since May 28 opponents are hitting .196 with four walks and 17 strikeouts against Logan”.- Posted by: Chad Jennings on Friday, July 22nd, 2011.

Can anyone tell me how long we’re going to go with Logan as the only lefty out of the bullpen given his track record this year? He is totally unreliable even pitching to left handed batters. He comes in to a game where Hughes has pitched fairly well and with the opposing team at 2 runs and he is instrumental in giving up 5 runs and probably losing the game. We’ve got to get another lefty besides Logan. Isthere not someone in the system better? if not, we’ve got to trade for one down the stretch. WE can’t go wih only one lefty. How many failures does it take before management realizes that the Logan thing is not working. Now Ganderson loses the ball again, this time inthe sun and a run scores. Whats going on in the outfield? Does Granderson have a pair of sunglasses? How can he lose sight of the ball so often?

Why do you sign Feliciano to a two year contract for $8 million and the guy is done for this year and probably next? The GM doing his great job as usual.

That was predictable given Feliciano’s work load, but still an acceptable gamble! It may not have happened if you did a better scouting job in Tulsa Seek!

And Kevin Whelan closes the SWB 3-2 win over Buffalo (Mets).

Regardless of whether the Yankees get Jimenez or NOT, Crashman ought to be looking for a lefty reliever. Boone Logan is NOT the answer from the left side. How many times is Girardi going to being this guy in and watch him fail? Today was another example of it. And against that power hitting lineup the Seattle Mariners. Now with the “singer” lefty out for the year (another great move by Crashman) he needs to focus on getting a lefty that is better than Boone the Goon.

Besides Logan’s improvement, we have two loogys stashed at SWB who may get a call unless we get someone better!

The Rockies’ original asking price for Jimenez, according to the Post, was left-hander Manny Banuelos, right-hander Dellin Betances and catcher Jesus Montero, plus right-hander Ivan Nova.

What are they smoking up there? I’m sure they’d trade Jimenez to the sux for some chowder.
