Game 101: Yankees vs. Mariners

CC Sabathia ranks fourth in the AL with 142 strikeouts entering play Tuesday.

You almost want to feel bad for the Seattle Mariners – 16 losses in a row and now they draw CC Sabathia, who leads the Majors with 14 wins this season and is 11-2 with a 2.12 ERA over his last 13 starts. In short, their road doesn’t seem to be getting a whole lot easier here.

“Well, our job is just to win games and that’s the bottom line,” Joe Girardi said. “You can’t worry about how your opponent’s been playing or what’s going on with their club, because on any given night a club can win a game. Clubs go through tough spells and then they get hot. You obviously don’t want to be the start of someone getting hot. So you go out and play the game, you play it the right way and you hope you get CC another win.”

That echoes something Freddy Garcia said last night, nodding to Seattle’s recent struggles. Their last win came on July 5 in Oakland, and as Garcia put it, “When that happens, you don’t want to be the guy [who loses].”

Fair enough. Sabathia lost his last time out at Tampa Bay, a tough luck outing, but Girardi figures that’ll just have Sabathia a little more motivated to dominate a struggling Seattle club.

“He hasn’t given us any reason why he wouldn’t,” Girardi said. “When you lose a game 2-1, it’s a frustrating loss. He pitched extremely well. So we expect him to just continue on his roll.”

Here are tonight’s lineups:

MARINERS (43-59)
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Brendan Ryan SS
Dustin Ackley 2B
Miguel Olivo C
Justin Smoak 1B
Franklin Gutierrez CF
Mike Carp DH
Greg Halman LF
Chone Figgins 3B

Pitching: Doug Fister RHP (3-11, 3.30)

YANKEES (60-40)
Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Eric Chavez 3B
Francisco Cervelli C

Pitching: CC Sabathia LHP (14-5, 2.62)

This and that: Eric Chavez has been activated from the disabled list, with Brandon Laird heading to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees waited until after batting practice to make the move officially. … The Yankees had later batting practice than usual due to Tuesday’s HOPE Week event. … Derek Jeter is hitting .324 (23-for-71) since returning from the disabled list. He was hitting .260 when he suffered a left calf strain. … The last time the Yankees lost to a team with a losing streak of 16 or more games was 1926, when the Red Sox snapped a 17-game losing streak with a 5-2 win at the original Yankee Stadium on Sept. 8, 1926. … CC Sabathia has won his last six starts against the Mariners, posting a 0.82 ERA dating back to Aug. 13, 2009.

No foolin around with Mo tonight. 3 up and 3 down. Way to go Mo! Great performance by CC except for the 8th inning and Robertson got the job done and preserved the win for CC. Sux way ahead of KC so won’t gain any ground on them tonight. Tex hits another homer so hopefully his power hitting is starting to come around again.

Robbie hasn’t been hitting well in clutch situations lately. His hitting has really cooled off since the All Star game. He needs to get it going again for the stretch run.

Give Robertson his due. He got out of a real tight jam giving up only 1 run. With rain delays etc. it probably threw off CC’s rhythm and Joe pushed it one inning too long. He was almost at 100 pitches the end of the 7th and once he walked the first batter in the 8th Joe should have had a feel that it was time for a change, but he waited until CC walked three batters with 0 outs and then goes to his bullpen. He was lucky the M’s didn’t score any more than1 run.

The Sux leading KC by 5 runs. The Yankees have to win this one. They’re up against King Felix tomorrow night.

“tough situation for Robertson. He pitched poorly the last outing. 3 men on base and 0 outs in the 8th inning and only up by 3 runs. CC pitched a great game but was left in one inning too long. Girardi has a way of doing this too often. He pushes his starters a hitter or an inning too long instead of getting them out when they are obviously losing command or control. Can Robertson be Houdini tonight? This could be the game right here.

Gameday didn’t tell you it was raining and Robertson had trouble gripping the ball and needed a new resin bag.
