Game 100: Yankees vs. Mariners

Does facing a team with fifteen-game losing streak (that’s right, fifteen) provide an easy matchup for the Yankees here in the Bronx tonight?

Not so fast, and don’t take that bait, says Joe Girardi. The Mariners may be even more motivated to get rid of this cloud here in New York.

“It’s a weird feeling, because obviously you’ve got to believe they will be playing extremely hard, because the motivation is to end this streak,” Girardi said. “It’s going to be a team that is excited to play here as well. They have some young kids on their club that I think will be excited, so I would throw out that they lost 15 in a row.”

Speaking of clouds … there’s no guarantee we play tonight. The tarp is still on the field and the forecast doesn’t look terrific.

UPDATE: Estimated start time is 9 p.m. ET.

Here are the lineups:

MARINERS (43-58)
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Brendan Ryan SS
Dustin Ackley 2B
Miguel Olivo C
Adam Kennedy 3B
Mike Carp DH
Justin Smoak 1B
Franklin Gutierrez CF
Greg Halman LF

Pitching: Jason Vargas LHP (6-8, 3.94)

YANKEES (59-40)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher DH
Russell Martin C
Andruw Jones RF
Eduardo Nunez 3B
Brett Gardner LF

Pitching: Freddy Garcia RHP (8-7, 3.21)

This and that: Eric Chavez was in the clubhouse to be evaluated and it looks like his rehab stint is over. He could be activated tomorrow; my guess would be that Brandon Laird will go back to the Minors. … Rafael Soriano was scheduled to pitch tonight for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, weather permitting. Even if he can’t go, they might think about activating him too. … Alex Rodriguez is right on track for a mid-August return, Joe Girardi said. He’s been working out in the pool down in Miami. … The Yankees will have today’s HOPE Week honorees from the Daniel’s Music Foundation perform tonight’s National Anthem.

Don’t look now but Jeter is starting to look like the Jeter of old, since his return he is hitting like .350 or something and boy do we need him…Its really good to see, its hard not pull for this guy…with injuries we need all players to step it up and Jeter has done that….

I’ve never been on the Dolphins board, I’m an eagles fan, and is there anybody better than Jeters been?…enough said…maybe solid successor though…

If you think Nunez will be better than Jeter, then will wanna know who your supplier is but if you are looking for a solid successor, well alright then.

Itdibo, I have seen you on the Dolphins Yahoo board, are you following me?

Mark Feinsand said Posada is going to be released now that Jeter has his 3,000 hit but I don’t agree and I have more info than he does out in Sunnyville. I say keep him and boot Cervelli in a trade or demote Cervi. Posada is still a dangerous bat when used pinch hit. Much more threatening than juice boy was when Torre couldn’t find a spot for him (Canseco)

That a boy Nunez…over .300 the last 30 games….4 to 1 now..and now Gardy, its 5 to 1…all right…do it boys…

Matt, I think you may be right…its sad but its probably the right thing to do…They may just keep him on the bench, spot start…or like you say maybe a release…but will the Yanks do that to him…i wonder…I vote that he is a bench player…

The Yankees are planning to release Posada. I believe he has missed 3 straight games. Either they will use him off the bench, make him the back up catcher, or release him. Do the math. He won’t be the DH anymore. I predict we will have a new DH or outfielder at the deadline and Posada won’t be here.
