Game 99: Yankees vs. A’s

Bartolo Colon vs. A's lifetime: 7-5, 3.36 ERA in 17 appearances (16 starts)

It’ll be the rubber game of this three-game series with the A’s this afternoon at Yankee Stadium, as the Yankees look to bounce back after running out of outs – as Nick Swisher put it – in the ninth inning yesterday against A’s closer Andrew Bailey.

They’ll be looking for a good outing from Bartolo Colon, who hasn’t won since a July 2 start against the Mets. His last time out, Colon pitched well enough to win, walking none and striking out nine in 6 1/3 innings and leaving with a 2-1 lead. The Tropicana Field roof had a little something to say about that, though.

No such troubles here today, although there were a few sprinkles of rain. We could use a big thunderstorm at some point to cool everything off, but I’d sure appreciate it if Mother Nature could hold off until at least after nine innings of play.

The A’s will give the ball to Gio Gonzalez, who lost to the Yankees on June 1 in Oakland (6.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K). His last time out, Gonzalez hurled seven innings of scoreless, four-hit ball at the Angels to pick up a breezy 9-1 win. Gonzalez ranks third in the AL in strikeouts per nine innings (8.93).

Brett Gardner gets a day off, with Andruw Jones taking over in left field. Derek Jeter logs a half-day as the DH. Here are the rest of the lineups:

ATHLETICS (44-56)
Jemile Weeks 2B
Coco Crisp CF
Hideki Matsui DH
Josh Willingham LF
David DeJesus RF
Conor Jackson 1B
Kurt Suzuki C
Cliff Pennington SS
Eric Sogard 3B

Pitching: Gio Gonzalez LHP (9-6, 2.33 ERA)

YANKEES (58-40)
Derek Jeter DH
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Russell Martin C
Andruw Jones LF
Eduardo Nunez SS
Brandon Laird 3B

Pitching: Bartolo Colon RHP (6-6, 3.34 ERA)

This and that: Rafael Soriano will pitch today for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He could take the mound again on Monday, and if those back-to-back games go well, activation might not be all that far off. … Yankees bench coach Tony Pena will be inducted into the Buffalo (N.Y.) Baseball Hall of Fame during a ceremony Sunday prior to the Triple-A Bisons’ game against Pawtucket. … Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner entered Sunday successful in 26 of his last 30 stolen base attempts since May 20, including 17 straight. That’s the most by a Yankee since Alex Rodriguez stole 17 straight without being caught in 2007, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Yesterday’s news: A.J. Burnett paid the price for a few mistakes in a 4-3 loss … Joe Girardi still has faith in Phil Hughes … Brandon Laird’s first MLB start didn’t go perfectly.

ok, maybe your right, I will accept that..I’ll accept that I was in fact projecting performance that had not occurred yet..but you know for a fact, if you think about it and re-read what I wrote…which is only my opinion..As you probably know, my intent was to show that Nunez, offensively, has done a nice job…period…no need to get all huffy…Also, so maybe you might re-think your posting or read what you’ve written before “clicking ” on the comment button….I’m not the only one on here that has said your posts seem to go into “all out” attack mode against other “yankee fan” posters..We are Yankee fans, this is not a general baseball site…so yes, i guess I’m a homer…Guilty!!..Again, neither one of us are experts…I actually at first, when I started bloggin on this site,( I blog on other sites, 4 or 5), thought you were “playing” or where another teams fan…(trolling)….so I get it now…you feel I attacked you way back when…hmmm..ok…sorry…that explains a lot here…

I have nothing against someone being a Homer, believe it or not I’m one myself. I know I don’t show it enough myself. I will try harder in the future to show it more often. Also, I know all we have are computers to communicate between us and there is no way I can tell, but I don’t get huffy, it’s just a blog, it’s not really getting upset over what any of us say to each other. Maybe I just take the game way too seriously. Actually I was fine with the way you blogged and that you were being a wise ass as part of your style of writing so I just resorted to that same type of writing as well. Actually, I kinda enjoyed the debates we had about Flores, Burnett and Nunez, who I don’t think is a bad UI. I just like it when things are kept real I guess. But I will stay off your back from now on so feel free to say what you want, again, I will try to lighten up.

itdibo020,

You really need to get a thicker skin, especially if you are going to go on blogs and post. There was no attack intended in my last post so stop taking everything so personal. Dang, it never fails, every time someone comes up with a contradictory point or phrases something in a way that might be disagreeable with someone regardless of what board or subject it is someone gets offended and feels they are being attacked. You act like I ATTACKED your manhood or intelligence. I didn’t!!! I merely wrote a contradictory post, something I am allowed to do as a free American citizen. If you don’t like that fact well that’s just too bad.

What I also find funny is that you waste your time complaining about how I attack you while at the same time you tell me to get a life. Ummmm, yeah right like anyone will give you credibility here Especially since YOU ARE the one who started with unprovoked attacks on me as you come out of nowhere and attack me with your first post. Don’t even try to deny it I can go back in time and dig it up if you want and have attacked me through other posts as well, don’t try to deny that either. So don’t you DARE come here acting like a completely innocent victim when the FACTS prove you are not one.

One other thing, this is what you said:

“I totally disagree with your “lets stick to reality comment”…thats the pace he has set so far in his limited time on the Yanks…that is reality!!!…its exactly what hes done…I didn’t exaggerate”

Don’t you remember what you wrote in your own posts? I’m just asking. I couldn’t care less about the source of who said what that’s not the point. Those projections were just projections which obviously don’t take into account other factors, they are just estimates. So like I said don’t be getting ahead of yourself here. Until he actually does that on the field that’s all they are…..projections. So NO, I didn’t twist anything around since I obviously didn’t have to.

Meister…Being only your allowed to use minor league stats…heres his total Major League stats (these are as a “fill-in” player)
(2 seasons) 220 abs .270 ave…19 steals in 23 attempts 4 hrs ..30 rbis
Not too many teams have a “bench player” like this….keep in mind he just turned 24 yrs old…

The projections I used were from major league baseball, its on their site, if he was to keep this pace he would achieve what I said earlier…of course keeping in mind that he is not a starter, mostly spot starts, so more than likely he would do even better with consistent ab’s, as we have seen…if i get his stats the last 30 games subbing for jeter and arod you are really going to have a canary…lol…He would be starting on most major league teams…nice player

Also, why do you go into attack mode when “any poster” credits a Yankee player for having a nice game, or like in this case, a fill-in who is doing a good job for an extended period…whats with the Capital Letters, instructing a poster to STICK TO REALITY…. ….lighten up with the attacks on posters….really not necessary….neither you nor I are authorities here…Heres the point you missed with my post…I never said his projected numbers were FACTS…you did , as usual, you twist posts to attack people….get a life dude…

Like

Yeah, so he has only done that once in his career big deal, and has only hit as many as 6 HRs twice in his minor league. BIG DEAL!!!! That was the minors, we are talking about the majors, so who really cares about what he did back then. Also, the thing about predicitng what he is capable in terms of stats ARE NOT based on reality regardless of what his pace is. Who the heck said he is capable of keeping up his so called pace at the major league level. He has never shown he is capable of putting up the current pace he is on. Is that what your crystal ball has told you? Did your crystal ball predict that he won’t go into any kind of slump (s) down the road. Did your crystal ball tell you he won’t go down with injuries.

Until he actually goes out and produces the type of numbers you say he can produce they are just estimates that your wishful thinking has produced and that’s all they are……estimates. Not hard facts!!! That’s the problem with extrapilating numbers we confuse them with facts when in all actuality they aren’t. So far he has 161 AB’s, that’s a career high for him at the major league level. We don’t even know if he could hit at this pace if he had triple the AB’s so don’t get ahead of yourself. It’s highly unlikely a young, unproven, inexperienced can hit at the level he has for a seriously protracted amount of time few hitters can or would especially those who haven’t had more than 161 AB’s.

Nunez is nothig more than a UI where his AB’s are going to be limited and inconsistant so it’s unlikely he will produce those type of numbers you are talking about. JEEEZ, I think you think he is unlike any other hitter and that he is invulnerable to slumps and injuries. That’s utterly ridiculous, so since he hasnt had a large number of AB’s at the major league level, no it’s not REALITY, again who cares what he did in the minors, this ain’t the minors. PLease stick with reality!!! IF he actually does produce those type of numbers in 3 to 4 times the number of AB’s like you said then I will gladly eat my words, but until then it is just wishful thinking.

Bob, I guess you were sweating in Toronto for two reasons!

Man, that was too friggin close for comfort. Unusual for Mo to pitch so poorly, although he doesn’t often do well when brought in in the 8th and then have to pitch the 9th and with a 3 run lead. Anyway, alls well that ends well. Good win. Now on to the next series. Great pitching by Colon. And even though Grandy had 3 strikeouts he homered and other guys contributed.

Like

That’s all folks! Good result and great conversation! Thanks guys see ya!

Like

When Mo pitches like this who do they go to in the 9th? Girardi should make a change because it’s obvious Mo hasn’t got his stuff today and the A’s have his number.

Like

Really I wonder if Mo isn’t losing his dominance. He’s lost some speed and is more hitable this year. No sure save every time and often a nail biter.

Like

Drama, ugh!

itdibo: What if 2 men get on base?

what’s Mo doing? Relief is shaky today. They should have left Colon in to finish at this rate.

Like

Nunez…he has 160 or so at bats…if you took his current stats and tripled them for a full season, (500 ab’s) he would have about 10 hrs .270, 70 rbis’ and 40 stolen bases….we would like to see him be more consistent in the filed however….just scored from third, after stealing third…basically stole a run….and who knows could be huge….you never know, at least now if somebody gets on base a hr does not tie the game…

Like

Lets stay with reality first of all. LEts not assume he can do something he couldn’t even do in the minors. Stick with reality, he’s never been able to produce 70 RBI’s or hit 10 HR’s in the minors. STICK WITH REALITY!!!!

Like

I would rather have Laird at 3B than Nunez even though Nunez has more experience, but Laird is a better all around player and better 3B. He is far more capable of putting up those type of numbers than Nunez.

Like

Hes had 9 hrs in the minors and his ave for the last 2 years was .305….Laird is probably a better fielder with more power, so I would want to get him in there some…and I may be in the minority , but I really like what Nunez has done filling in….They are different players, laird and nunez…hard to compare…nunez more ave and speed, Laird a true 3rd sacker with more power.
I totally disagree with your “lets stick to reality comment”…thats the pace he has set so far in his limited time on the Yanks…that is reality!!!…its exactly what hes done…I didn’t exaggerate…in fact, he may be even better than his current stats with consistent playing time over a whole season….Maybe he hits .290 or .300…hes hit over .300 since he filled in for jeter and arod…I am not making anything up…it is what it is…why do you have a problem with the post…please explain…love to hear it…I assume you think he won’t keep the current pace and will slump…I guess in rbis…minors high was 55???…he has hit .322 in the minors also..

Like

Insurance run. Good base running by Nunez. Mo should be able to shut this down and get another save. Unfortunately when we win the Sux win.

Nice job Robertson. Comes in and gives up 2 doubles to the first 2 hitters and now it’s 6-3. He’s been great in relief. What’s going on today?

Wow! Matsui sure rakes in NYC!

I hope Robertson isn’t going to come in and blow this lead. Colon pitched a great game after the first inning. The relief has to shut the A’s down the rest of the way.

Just so you know the Sux are feeding on the poor mariners again. It’s 5-2. Hopefully we can do the same when we meet them next week. The Sux keep winning and we are struggling to keep up and gradually falling behind.

Like

what’s up with Tex still. I’m tired of talking about him and tired of watching him hit into DPs and grounders and strike outs. Grounds into DP with two men on base. Great in the field no question, but at the plate really bad. Obviously it’s too big a problem for Long to fix? Is it his head? Is it his mechanics? Whatever, we’re paying him millions to do very little now offensively. With ARod out he needs to step up. If he doesn’t get it together we could be in real trouble down the stretch. We can’tfall back on the rest of the lineup every game.

A weak bottom of the order today. No ARod of course and Jones, Nunez and Laird. Not a lineup to give you a lot of confidence. The big bats in the lineup are going to have to come through. At least Jones gets a hit. He is hitting ok off left handers. tough spot to put Laird, a rookie, in but with injuries not much choice.

Like

Andruw is too fragile. I can see Thames replacing him soon unless we pick up a bat or 2.

Bob, trading CC is simply to get something for him knowing he may just leave. Unless the Suxs get involved, we will probably re-sign him anyway.

Trade CC? He’s the only sure starter we have for a win in the rotation. We’ve got to have him down the stretch to have any hope. He dominates a game like none of our other starters do. We’re not really sure he’s going to opt out. Sounds like he wants to stay. Whether he’s telling the truth who knows?

Like

We need a bat or 2 also. Posada and Jeter need to move across the street and report to Citi Field in the morning.

The way Boston beat up on Felix the other day gives me pause. Would Ubaldo be better? Hmmmmmm! And I think Seattle wants more!
By RobertGKramer@AOL.Com

Ubaldo is worse than Bustnett. Noesi should get a chance to start.

Like

Here we are Robert. Already down 1 run and Colon has given up 3 hits, so not a super start. Hopefully he will settled down and shut the door the rest of the way. The Yankees need to get some hits and runs. They should win the series against a rather weak A’s team. They can’t afford to fall much further behind the Sox.

Like

I think the Yankees should trade Sabithia and then re-sign him the offseason. They can get a substantial haul for him if they pay his salary. The MLBPA would be no more up in arms with this than if Kerry Wood is traded and then re-signs with the Cubs in the winter. Sabithia would then essentially opt out immediately and not wait until the offseason. Its a forgone conclusion he will opt out and we can trade him to get some parts for the future. Sabathia can come back with a 7 year deal waiting for him.
