Game 97: Yankees vs. A’s

Greetings from Yankee Stadium, where it’s as steamy as anyone can remember in recent memory – temperatures in the Bronx were over 100 degrees this afternoon, and it’s still expected to be well into the 90s by the time the Yankees and Athletics get on the field to open this homestand.

Even Gene Monahan, who’s seen it all during his time around here, had trouble remembering a day when the old office felt like this. His best recollection was likening this to life in the Carolina League, back in the days when players thought drinking soda was a good idea to stay on the field for nine innings or more.

Obviously, the players have been advised to stay hydrated a little better these days, with water and Gatorade leading the way. Monahan said that should apply to the fans as well, urging everyone to be smart about handling the heat. Putting some iceberg lettuce on your head – as Joe Girardi said he once saw players do – probably won’t help. But I guess it wouldn’t hurt.

It’s like a bad late night monologue… “It was so hot at Yankee Stadium today…” But, if you were wondering, here’s a pic of the dugout thermometer, courtesy of WFAN’s Sweeny Murti: http://yfrog.com/kkxx0tpj And keep in mind, this was at 6 p.m.

Phil Hughes gets the ball tonight opposite Trevor Cahill in a matchup of right-handers. Hughes’ first start back from the disabled list was so-so (a loss at Cleveland on July 6), but his last time out (a win July 17 at Toronto) offered plenty of encouragement that he looked more like last year’s 18-game winner. We’ll find out tonight if he can continue to improve.

Here are the lineups:

ATHLETICS (43-55)
Jemile Weeks 2B
Coco Crisp CF
Josh Willingham DH
Hideki Matsui LF
Scott Sizemore 3B
David DeJesus RF
Conor Jackson 1B
Kurt Suzuki C
Cliff Pennington SS

Pitching: Trevor Cahill RHP (8-8, 3.16)

YANKEES (57-39)
Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada 1B
Eduardo Nunez 3B
Francisco Cervelli C

Pitching: Phil Hughes RHP (1-2, 8.44)

Tonight is a CLASSIC example why I don’t like Hughes. The guy is in his 4-5 season and is staked to a 14-2 lead and CANNOT get through 5 innings????? I am tired of the excuses for this guy. Hughes and Joba do NOT have what it takes at all. Yeah I know the Yankees won 17-7 but Hughes’ performance tonight SUCKED!!!!!!!
