Game 95: Yankees at Rays

ST. PETERSBURG — So, on Sunday, Sean Rodriguez shattered a light bulb. On Monday, there was a power outage. And on Tuesday, Curtis Granderson lost a ball in the roof. What’s the next strange occurrence at this quirky Tropicana Field?

We’ll find out soon.

Joe Girardi called an audible with his lineup just before batting practice, opting to put Nick Swisher in as the designated hitter and start Andruw Jones in right field. Girardi said it wasn’t physical — “Just changed my mind.” — so he probably just wanted to give Swisher a break from the turf, since he hasn’t had one yet in this second half.

Derek Jeter is back leading off, which is no surprise but is interesting considering how much he has struggled (5-for-26 since that magical 3,000th-hit day) and how well Wednesday’s No. 9 hitter, Brett Gardner (.591 batting average in the second half), is hitting. Girardi talked pregame about the possibility of a top three of Gardner, Jeter and Granderson while Alex Rodriguez is out. As for Jeter dropping to the bottom third of the lineup? I’d think something really drastic would have to take place for that to happen.

The lineup’s below, but I’m curious as to how y’all would order things while A-Rod is out …

YANKEES (56-38)
Jeter, SS
Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Swisher, DH
Russell Martin, C
Jones, RF
Eduardo Nunez, 3B
Gardner, LF

Pitching: RH Freddy Garcia (7-7, 3.43 ERA)

RAYS (51-44)
Johnny Damon, DH
Robinson Chirinos, C
Casey Kotchman, 1B
Evan Longoria, 3B
Matt Joyce, RF
B.J. Upton, CF
Sam Fuld, LF
Rodriguez, 2B
Reid Brignac, SS

Pitching: LH David Price (9-7, 3.73 ERA)

Some goodies from the game notes …

* The Yankees have had 17 players on the disabled list, the most of any Major League team in 2011 . Their current total of 11 players on the DL matches their total from all of last season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

* The Yanks are 19-9 with a Major League-high 39 homers vs. lefty starters this season.

* New York has gone seven straight games without allowing a homer, which marks its longest stretch since ’08.

* With one more stolen base, Gardner will become the first Yankees player with back-to-back 30-stolen-base seasons since Alfonso Soriano did it in three straight years from 2001-03.

* Opposing batters have hit just .182 with runners in scoring position off Garcia this year.

Some links from last night …

* Yanks lose, but Colon looks good

* Yankees Notebook, on Soriano, Nova, Mo and Garrison

* Yanks expect bounceback effort from Garcia

* HBO special on Jeter to air July 28

Robert M,
Yes, I meant Gardy. Thanks.

killer: You mean, I think, leading off Gardy and not Grandy. No?

Checking the lineup for tonight saw that Grandy was given the night off given his crashing into the outfield wall last night. I guess he woke up today a little sore and Girardi decided to give him the day off. He doesn’t take many games off. Two big pieces missing tonight in ARod and Granderson. Hopefully the fillins can get the job done. The key tonight is CC’s pitching. If he pitches like he has lately the Yankees won’t need too many runs to win. Haven’t got today’s blog in yet so having to comment on last game’s lineup and commentary.

This is what Girardi said in regards to leading off Grandy, “It’s something that you definitely think about”. Notice he said, it’s something YOU think about. He didn’t say I (as himself) think about it.

Haha – nah, i doubt the memory discriminates on age, either that or mine is trying to tell me something, at 27 i still need the family to remind me of upcoming birthdays!
.
i think Martin has actually held his own, not exactly the easiest place to play ball, he’s not causing drama & is keeping errors at a minimum – much better to stop runs scoring as a catcher than to be putting them on the board! (although you’d like that to happen too!)

Sorry Mr. Moulton…the Meister strikes again…my apologies…yes memory lapse…now what was I sayin?…lol

thanks Robert for clarifying the situation regarding Martin. I was reading itdibo’s comment to me and trying to figure out why he was writing me defending catcher Martin. I’ve had no trouble with Martin nor have I expressed anything negative about him. Anyway, Itdibo got me and Yankeemeister mixed up. As we get older we have some memory lapses. All is forgiven Itdibo.

Robert Moulton..sir…Martin has the 2nd best caught stealing % in the AL, they said it last night on the Yankee telecast. On the rays telecast, they said the Yanks are running on our catchers like we (the rays) running on the red sox catchers…Also, I think you missed 3/4 of what I wrote pertaining to ALL-STAR Russell Martin (Weiters and Martin are the best both all-stars) …fact…we are #1 in starters ERA (whose the catcher)..Sabathia, Colon and Garcia all have GREAT ERA’s (whose the catcher). Who frames pitches the best I’ve seen in a long time on the Yankees, stealing strikes for his pitchers…Who calls the game from behind the plate (the catcher)….Martin has 3 passed balls, saltalmachia has 11, arencibia- toronto has 12 Point is, the catching position is more about defense than offense (cervelli is 2 for 22 in throwing out runners)…Also, Martin has 10 homers…not great, but not bad either….Would I like to see him hit .325 with 30hrs and 120 rbi’s…absolutely…but its not going to happen…we may get 15 hrs and 60 rbis though…with his defense, I love it!!! He deserved a lot of credit for guiding these old and young pitchers thru games…even Nova..and CC has never been better….give him some credit…sheesh
Also, class act by Martin, going to the All star manager and telling him, Washington, to make himself the emergency catcher and let Weiters who has never been in an all-star game, catch some innings….Martin is a class act and a good Yankee!!!

Bill,
That was not Bob Moulton knocking Martin the other day. It was Matt Saiki AKA Yankeemeister!

bark,
Too bad framing pitches isn’t a major part of a catcher’s job. There’s no questioning Martin’s D he’s been a solid catcher for years and has always done a good job of handling pitchers. The problem has been health issues with him ( bad back, and bad knee) and his weak bat. Typical game from Martin offensively. With those two facts and the fact that Cervelli is a this team does need an upgrade that’s a FACT!!! Also, the fact that he is 10th in the majors in CS% he is still below his career average in that category which is an average 31%. So it’s not saying much.

We’ve heard how well Cervelli handled the pitching staff when he first came up, look at him now. The catching has to be more than D alone, especially with an offense that has been inconsistent, how much more obvious does that have to get?

Like

bpark,

Actually we are both wrong when it comes to best CS%. He ranks 9th in the ML when it comes to CS %

Matt Weiters .456
Alex Avila .354
Miguel Montero .324
Miguel Olivo .317
Yorvit Torrealba .316
Geovanny Soto .304
Kurt Suzuki .299
Carlos Ruiz .286
Russell Martin .282

So Russell Martin is 6th in the AL in CS %

This next game (vs shields) is the game we need to do the Gardner, Jeter and Granderson order that Girardi says he may do….Gardner if he gets on can create a lot of problems and maybe force a fastball to Jeter, or more fastballs….and Robert , i totally agree about Colon and Garcia, they have been remarkable and can work out of jams and still go 6 and 7 innings for you and thats all we need…remember, least we forget last year, we had vasquez 4th and Mitre 5th….and we know how bad that was…The Yankee haters out there are really having a tough time with the Colon/ Garcia thing, saying they are too old…I love going on the Sux blog and listen to them cry…they all thought they knew it all in the beginning of the year, real experts…now…they are oh so quiet…This was a real clutch performance for Garcia, who is master at getting hitters off stride and forcing weak swings…hes a real pitcher and Colon is a strike thrower who gets ahead and makes you hit his pitch…both ways work as we have seen….don’t look at their records, look at those ERA’s….wow

Mo mows them down in order. Another great save. And a great pitching performance by Garcia. Garcia and Colon are amazing. Colon pitched wel enough last night to win the game except for some stupid mistakes in the 7th inning. Who ever though these two old guys would be pitching so well andkeep healthy this far into the year. Great pick ups. Now it’s up to CC to close this out and win the series. The way he’s been pitching if the Rays found Garcia hard to hit they’ll be whiffing all night with CC. But Shields great on the other side so will probably be a fairly low scoring game.

I was skeptical that Nunez would get it done with 2 outs and men on 2nd and 3rd in the 9th but he came through with a single and scored too runs. Great at bat. Now all Mo needs to do is hold the lead and chalk up another save. Too bad the Sox won again tonight. When we win they win. When we lose they lose. We can’t seem to gain any ground since th All Star break.

I’d go with your order Roert. The only thing I’d change would be not to have Jones in the lineup. I don’t like his production at the plate. I’d rather try Dickerson or Golson and see what they can do. We’ve been experimenting with Andruw Jones all year and he just can’t hit the ball in critical situations. He hits left handers better but he’s not great there either. I’d trade Jones away if any one would want him or release him altogether. Other than that, I think your changes make sense certainly putting Gardner in #1 and Jeter #6. We can speculate all we want but there is the loyalty factor always, and how would Jeter react to be moved down. Does Girardi have the courage to do i in spite of criticism. That’s the big question.

The original design was to have Jones only face left-handed pitching!

RGK…I like this because of the better grouping…3 speed balls together…nunez, gardy and grandy…makes more sense…I think
