If Phil is right, do the Yankees need Ubaldo?

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — That’s the question I’m pondering from St. Pete, just a few hours before the start of a four-game series against the Rays and just a few hours removed from a very convincing start by Phil Hughes.

Hughes looked awfully close to that 18-game winner from 2010 against the Blue Jays on Sunday, when he notched his first win and first quality start, retired eight of his final nine hitters he faced and registered just 80 pitches through six innings. He could’ve gone longer, but Hughes (pictured left by The Associated Press) went deep enough to make a very important point — he looks like an effective starting pitcher again.

Over the All-Star break, the right-hander worked with pitching coach Larry Rothschild on better aligning his stride towards the plate and adjusting his curveball grip. That grip gave him a much sharper breaking ball he was able to use as a reliable No. 2 pitch to offset his four-seamer (one that consistently sat in the 92- to 93-mph range and got better as the game wore on).

Now, the question: If Hughes truly is back, and he’s the 2010 version again, do the Yankees need Ubaldo Jimenez?

Here’s the thing about Jimenez: Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd doesn’t really have to move him. It reminds me a lot of the situation with Padres closer Heath Bell in recent years. Jimenez is under club control for a while (signed through 2012 with two additional club options thereafter), he’s awfully affordable (making no more than $8 million through 2014) and his stock is rather low (Jimenez is 5-8 with a 4.08 ERA in 18 starts this year — though he does have a 2.56 ERA since the start of June).

Since the Rockies are 9 1/2 games out of first place and the starting-pitching market is weak, it’s not surprising they would shop him. But considering all the above-mentioned factors, it’s no wonder Colorado seeks the sun and the moon for the services of Ubaldo (pictured right by the AP).

MLB.com colleague Thomas Harding says the Rockies are at least listening to offers for Jimenez, but a deal remains unlikely. Peter Gammons, meanwhile, put the chances of a deal at 10 percent. We all know how quickly things can change as the non-waiver Trade Deadline draws closer, though.

With regards to the Yankees, the names that have surfaced as potential pieces to a deal are the likes of Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances, Ivan Nova and Jesus Montero (though SI.com is reporting today that Montero wouldn’t be the centerpiece of the potential trade, since the Rockies don’t view him as a catcher).

Now, if Hughes is right, then the Yankees would have an in-house rotation of CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Hughes at the top, with the final spots going to any two between Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia and Nova.

Would they still need Jimenez to make a return trip to the playoffs? And would it be worth it to give up what the Rockies would want in return?

Curious to hear your thoughts.

Sorry Mr. Moulton…comment on Martin meant for the Meister…he seems to have a problem with martin now….here we go…

Like

Robert Moulton..sir…Martin has the 2nd best caught stealing % in the AL, they said it last night on the Yankee telecast. On the rays telecast, they said the Yanks are running on our catchers like we (the rays) running on the red sox catchers…Also, I think you missed 3/4 of what I wrote pertaining to ALL-STAR Russell Martin (Weiters and Martin are the best both all-stars) …fact…we are #1 in starters ERA (whose the catcher)..Sabathia, Colon and Garcia all have GREAT ERA’s (whose the catcher). Who frames pitches the best I’ve seen in a long time on the Yankees, stealing strikes for his pitchers…Who calls the game from behind the plate (the catcher)….Martin has 3 passed balls, saltalmachia has 11, arencibia- toronto has 12 Point is, the catching position is more about defense than offense (cervelli is 2 for 22 in throwing out runners)…Also, Martin has 10 homers…not great, but not bad either….Would I like to see him hit .325 with 30hrs and 120 rbi’s…absolutely…but its not going to happen…we may get 15 hrs and 60 rbis though…with his defense, I love it!!! He deserved a lot of credit for guiding these old and young pitchers thru games…even Nova..and CC has never been better….give him some credit…sheesh

Where’s tonight’s game opening comment and lineup? Otherwise we’re commenting on last night blog. Are we going to see something soon?

Not a lot of weeping and wailing amongst Yankee fans with Mitre going on DL. What did he do to go on the DL? Is it a hangnail or something? Anyway, hope Garrison can fill in and use up some innings in relief. I see from the order tonight that Giardi left Jeter in #1 spot intead of Gardner. It’s a loyalty thing no doubt but how long do you go with loyalty if the guy really can’t get on base and make things happen in the #1 spot. What will it take for Girardi to bite the bullet and do it. Tex still in #3 in spite of his
poor batting average, uppercutting the ball and missing, hitting into DPs, striking out. He needs to move to #5 anyway for a while. He’s just not producing and his mechanics are terrible. How long will it take?

Hey…. the SLAUGHTERED MEAT TRAY went on the DL and the yanks just brought up a lefty from AA…kid that was with them in spring training and almost made the team…Steve Garrison…I think hes like 24, a starter and he will serve as the long man..anxious to see him throw an inning or 2…maybe we get a big lead tonight…at least we have another lefty now….like to see JC Romero soon also..

A couple Scranton notes…trying to follow the red barons but….JC Romero should be brought up he has a 1.64 ERA, in place of MEAT TRAY…..Yanks keep bringing up Golson and Dickerson but theres also a player, thats played in the Majors before, by the name of Parraz, who is hitting .300 at Scranton….Montero had a bomb last night hitting .282..with 8 hrs now

How the Hell did this team win this game tonight? Unreal. A good win but man I’m left shaking my head in wonder. BTW Rivera is unbelieveable. I swear the guy will be closing out games in 2025.

Like

I’m shaking my head too….I don’t want to see the Yanks change this Robertson/Rivera thing they got going….I was impressed with Noesi also…he looks real composed out there right now, comfortable, making pitches, has good stuff and he allowed us time to get the bats going and get into their bullpen and back into the game…Russell Martin…calls a good game, I’ve noticed a big difference between him and Posada in game calling, blocks balls better than most catchers I’ve seen, has a real good arm, I believe he is second amongst catchers in catching base stealers…most importantly he steals/frames strikes…he makes anything close look like a strike..one of the best I’ve seen at this…offensive pluses, not an automatic out..hits to all fields, has hit a lot of balls right at outfielders this year, will take a walk, will steal a base on ya…I’m impressed and I don’t care about his batting average…meaning less…gets tougher as the situation deems it…and he was cheap considering alternatives…big fan of his…

itdibo020,

Don’t know where you got your info., but they are wrong. Martin isn’t 2nd in CS%, he is 10th with 27%. Being 10th in any year isn’t a bad thing but having a 27% CS% is nothing to BRAG about, especially since he has a 31% career percentage which isn’t much to brag about either but isn’t bad. Martin not an automatic out? You don’t care about his batting average? It’s meaningless? You must be a new fan to baseball and there’s nothing wrong with that we all have to start somewhere after all, but I can’t believe anyone would say those things with a straight face of a hitter who can’t hithis weight .223 and has an OBP of .325. Uhhhhh, you better start caring, especially since there is nothing behind him, except another mediocre catcher who is hitting in the low .200’s in Cervelli. I would also like to Montero in the majors sooner rather than later, but this organization is being stubborn about calling him up. The only thing that concerns me about Montero other than his D is his power number which have fallen from the previous year. One last thing, quit comparing Martin to a player who is on his last leg as a major leaguer in Posada. Besides Martin couldn’t hold Posada’s jock strap as an offensive player. When Posada was Martin’s age he could at least hit 28 HR’s. and hit for a good BA.

Ken Singleton mentioned last night that Martin is second…in the AL.

Granderson gets a hit off a lefty, steals second and set the whole inning up…love watching him and gardner play….Russell martin…big ab…nice job

Like

Jones and Martin had good at bats vs the kid….do you believe how many rookies the Rays play in such a crucial game…rookie catcher…rookie pitcher with the game on the line…even a rookie starter…Yanks kind of lucky to get this one, but they did grind at bats…Gardner is a true lead off hitter….8 or 9 pitches every at bat and he makes you throw strikes and then gets a hit or a walk…drives teams crazy….if he was a better bunter…look out…he’d hit .325…nice player…not a star but a real nice player..real hustler….great win tonight…Robertson is unbelievable….wow

Like

Are we going to leave Granderson on base when this inning is over and have nothing to show for it? You’ve got to hit guys in who are on base. Too often the Yankees strand too many. Intentionally walk Swish and pitch to loser Jones. Pretty safe to pitch to him.

Like

Actually Cano hasn’t been doing a very good job at hitting in crucial situations lately either. Won the home run derby but where are the home runs in a real game They seem to have dried up.

Like

Anyone see the mighty Tex strike out again? And did you see the pitch he swung at for strike 3? He can’t pick up the pitches at all. He is more of a liability than an asset right now. Good in the field but at the plate–a write off. No sense complaining about the calls. Can’t blame his poor hitting on the umpire. How long do we have to put up with this until they either change his place in the lineup or pull him out for afew games to work on his mechanics. And to the think of the money the management pays this guy to hit like this.

Like

If you had asked me a few years ago who I’d want at the plate in a crucial situation in the game with two men on base and two outs, I would have said without hestitation, Derek Jeter. Can’t say it any more. He swings at some terrible pitches. He could have walked in his last at bat but instead struck out. That might turn out to be the turning point in the game if the Yankees lose. They tied it in the 8th and that’s good but Jeter could have driven in at least 1 run to have given Mariano an opportunity to pitch the 9th and make a save.

Like

Jeter again….2 bad pitches…strike three…how many times do we have watch this…bunt down third if you can’t hit anymore…sheesh
On a side note…O’s have the worst pitching I have ever seen, Scranton would light up there staff….can’t throw strikes and when they do…right down the middle.
Good inning by yanks…we are even..Gardner another key hit…should be hitting lead off…more at bats and more trouble for the other team….Noesi, I hope the Yanks are thinking about starting him next year, cool as a customer….has a 95 mph heater and has a filthy curve, and change up…he looks like a keeper

On another note wonder how long the Orioles stay with Bucky Boy? I figure he will be in the ESPN Booth before long.

Like

robert G right now the Yankees are playing for the wild card in the AL. This team does NOT look good at all. And there needs to be a trade made to shore up our starting staff. The Yankees need to truly and seriously consider the Jimenez trade.

Like

After watching Upton K on a similar pitch Tex should NOT have taken that 3rd strike at all. Come on by the middle innings players know the strike zone of the umpire that given night. Tex has had a bad year for him. Honestly, have to wonder if the Fielder/Pujois free agency is getting to him

Like

You might like to know or not that the Sox are beating the Orioles 15-7. How come the Sox can get 15 runs in a game and the Yankees are struggling to get 5 if they’re lucky. How long since we’ve seen the Yankees really blow out another team?

Like

Has Long not started to work with Tex yet? This is really bad. Two guys on and he strikes out. Sure if might have been questionable on 3rd strike but you don’t stand there looking if it’s close. They either get Tex straightened out and yesterday or we’re in trouble scoring runs down the stretch. Especially with ARod out of the lineup. This guy is not earning his money right now and hasn’t for a month. What is going on with him? Is it his head? Is it his swing? Can’t Long help him. How long is it going to take to get him to turn this around. It’s already been too long.

Like

I wonder if the Rockies would go for Montero and AJ for Jimenez? I mean after another GREAT performance by Bustnett tonight who would NOT want him. Hell throw in his salary while we are at it. Right now Jimenez has got years, maturity and a better arm over AJ. If the trade was offered and I was Crashman I’d jump at it.

Like

HA!!! The Rockies would be out of their freakin’ minds to trade Jimenez winding up with BUSTnett. The only thing that saved his neck was the Yankee offense which rallied to tie the score and put the winning run across. This team won the game despite Bustnett, not because of him. Just hope he isn’t continuing his trend of putting together poor second half seasons.

Like

I think it’s overdue for Joe to stop feeling that he owes something to Jeter for all his good years and slot Gardner into #1. Jete can’t get the hits in critical situations any more. You just don’t have the confidence any more when he comes to bat that he’s going to get it done. Also I don’t think we can go with Posada the rest of the year as DH. He’s done a lot for the Yankees franchise but he is not getting the power hits and he’s not driving guys in like he should. Swish on base after a single and Posada hits into a double play. I don’t think Jones is the answer either. We need to trade for a DH who can put some fear into the opposing pitchers and get us some runs when we need them.

Like

Posada…are u serious?….swisher swings at first pitch ..single…posada swings at first pitch double play…2 pitches and 2 outs….can we get that for aj….swing at everything he throws and make outs so he can stay in the game longer?….Does Posada have any thought process on what they are trying to do here….you have a tired rays bullpen…and you swing at balls on the ground?…really….whats the number for Scranton?…let me make a call here….sheesh

Like

oh boy…Jeter…come on…2 balls 0 strikes…right down the middle you stand there and take, then you get a pitch high and in that you can’t hit and you swing, then you swing at a ball in the dirt…man on third and 1 out…just hit the freakin ball…or give 1/2 your money to granderson because he has been saving your butt all year…good hustle by Tex in beating out a hit..btw…..also is it me or is Gardner our lead off man…walks, hits…steals..(12 in a row)??…how can you as a manager have jeter lead off…he doesn’t walk?….is he the best hitter on the team?…no…is he fast…hmmm…little above ave maybe…so whats the reason, to place a hot hitter like gardner who makes the pitcher work….bat 8th or 9th….very puzzling and reflects on Clueless joe and his decision making processes here…frustrating manager…

AJ not getting it done again tonight. Always too many walks, lack of control and concentration. Too many homers in most games and it’s always a guessing game as to which AJ is going to show up every night. Of course the Yankees haven’t given him much run support either so that doesn’t help. this starter for Tampa Bay. Who he is? Out of nowhere. He’s certainly no Cy Young candidate. Now 4-1 because of AJ’s walks. Why can’t we get any kind of consistency from our starting pitching. I would be inclinded to put AJ in the bullpen but of course management isn’t going to do that with all we’re paying him. Now it’s almost a home run from Upton And we were going to push the Rays further down in the standings in this series. This is the Rays not the Orioles.

Like

Bustnett has always had a problem with control and consistency, the way he is going right now he won’t make it to the 5th inning. Can’t blame a lack of offense if the Yanks lose tonight, Bustnett has put them in a hole from the start.

Yanks could definitely use a 4th DH/OF’er, Josh Willingham? Don’t know who this team could get as another Inf. who could play 3B, pickings are kind of slim.

Part of the Rockies rumors mention one of your favorites Matt, Ty Wiggington!

\I agree with the above comments. You can’t have enough experienced starting pitching. With the age of Colon and Garcia you just never know how far they can go and when one of them might go down. Also let’s not get carried away on Hughes after only start after the DL. Who knows how he’ll wear over the longer haul and whether possibly he could end up with another injury. If Jiminez is available and we don’t have to give up too much of our prospect talent then grab him. We do need a utility infielder as well. Both Chavez and now Pena are out of the lineup so it’s pretty thin if Nunez doesn’t get it done or someone gets injured. Hopefully Laird is ready to ste up.

Like

This team doesn’t need another staff ace after CC in the rotation, but if a guy like Jimenez is available to help solidify the rotation after CC, then go after him. A trade package that would include Montero along with Nova or Adam Warren should be enough to do the trick. don’t know how Hughes will do the rest of the season, nor does this team know how Colon will do physically since it’s the first time in a while he would be going deep into the season plus he is still trying to get over his last injury, don’t know if it’s still bothering him or not. you can saythe same about Garcia who has gone deep into the season only once in the past 4 or 5 years and that was last year and he was pretty average in the second half. Those are a lot of question marks in the rotation, plus we don’t know how AJ BUstnett will do either since joining the Yankes he has an 8-12 record with an ERA well over 4.00. Doesn’t look like a playoff rotation.

Getting a guy like Jimenez will only help to make the rotation all that much better. I am fine with pulling the trigger on a Jimenez deal.

Like

Gotta suck for Pena – i know the guy is never going to rival the best players in Baseball, but the timing couldn’t have been any worse for him! As for do we need Jiminez, probably not, i’ve seen more than enough from Nova this season to be satisfied he’s got more than a little potential to work well for us down the line. If we get Hughes back healthy & effective as well as AJ being consistent then there’s potential for us to have a decent rotation for the next few years. Might just be me, but i’d consider a 5th starter spot for some of the prospects next year, see if their triple-a form & potential translate into big league ability.

Need to reach the playoffs? Maybe not, but a chance to add an ace if the price is reasonable should not be passed up. Banuelos and Betances must remain untouchable since they are expected to be top of the rotation talents in three or four years. Montero, Nova, Phelps, and/or Warren would not be unreasonable to me!
