Game 87: Yankees vs. Rays

As my 4 train pulled into the Yankee Stadium stop this morning, the conductor got on and made the following announcement: “Let’s go, Derek Jeter.” Coming down the stairway, a stocky NYPD cop announced to no one in particular: “It’s a great day for history.” And there were thousands already gathered outside Gates 4 and 6, waiting for their chance to see a great moment.

And so maybe there will be one to cheer for. It certainly is a picture-perfect day in the Bronx as we try this all over again, with Derek Jeter two hits from 3,000. Everyone is anxious to get the milestone in the books; the players want to see it and be part of it, but they also want to get back to the business of focusing on only winning baseball games.

So, too, does Jeter. He admitted in Cleveland that he is uncomfortable with the constant crush of cameras trailing his every move, including those filming the chase for a HBO documentary. Jeter’s always trying to get a hit when he steps in the box, but he would agree that the spotlight is burning even brighter than usual these days.

Here are today’s lineups:

RAYS (49-39)
Johnny Damon DH
Ben Zobrist RF
Evan Longoria 3B
Casey Kotchman 1B
B.J. Upton CF
Matt Joyce LF
John Jaso C
Reid Brignac SS

Pitching: David Price LHP (8-7, 3.56)

YANKEES (51-35)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Russell Martin C
Jorge Posada DH
Andruw Jones RF
Eduardo Nunez 3B
Brett Gardner LF

Pitching: A.J. Burnett RHP (8-7, 4.12)

  • Alex Rodriguez did not speak to the media pre-game, and the Yankees said there would be nothing further at the moment on his right meniscus tear. A-Rod is weighing surgery that could cost him a month, and Joe Girardi said a decision should be made today. Girardi said he won’t play Rodriguez today or tomorrow for sure.
  • Nick Swisher was out of the lineup again with a tight left quad. He suffered it on Thursday chasing Ben Zobrist’s triple in the right field corner, after trying to kick it to stop its progress. He wasn’t in last night’s rained-out lineup either.
  • Sounds like you can pretty much forget about Eric Chavez stepping in to replace A-Rod. Chavez is still dealing with back issues and Girardi said there is no timetable for his return. Either way, get ready to see a lot of Eduardo Nunez.
  • Girardi said he could use Freddy Garcia – who was rained out from his start yesterday – out of the bullpen, “but we really haven’t done that much, so we would have to see how we would do it.”

I think I got it…You are saying he hasn’t been Lee or Halladay so he is a complete Bust….Your comparing Burnett to Lee and Halladay?….but not Lackey?…Got it!!!

A Hollywood movie writer could not have written a better script than the one Derek Jeter has authored today as he entered the baseball history books once again with his 3,000th hit (a dramatic homerun) … And (5-5), to make the day even more exciting and special, leading the Yankees to victory !!!
.
Congratulations Derek !!!

Robertson is another Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde pitcher. Looks great then looks bad. Still do NOT trust this bullpen until it is in the hands of Mo. With Arod looking at possible surgery and Chavez not coming back soon others on this team NEED to pick it up offensively. Still think before July 31st Cashman NEEDS to get an arm or two.

What exactly do you think Cashman is doing Seek?

Unfortunately I think Melky may have been a bad influence on Cano!

Hopefully, Cano would have grown some since then.

I’d love to have Melky Cabrera back. Trouble is he was looking for a full time job last Winter as were most of the guys who would have been a good fourth for us!

Like this

He pitched well again today, I think Rothschild and martin have helped him this year as opposed to last year…if they hold on today, thats nine wins…how many has cliff lee have?….oh thats right 9 wins…how about that!!! and what does cliff lee get…oh thats right DOUBLE what Burnette gets…..kind of shoots a hole in that theory….AGAIN!!!…sheesh

Like this

I’d be inclined to forget 2010 for Burnett. It was his first losing year with double digit decisions and an ERA over 5.

Like this

Yeah and lets forget his first year as well and start from scratch, while we’re at it lets forget 2008 as well since that seems to be a fluke as well. Sorry Robert, it doesn’t work that way. Even if we did forget 2010 that would still leave the 13 wins in 2009 which is still a mediocre total for a pitcher who is getting paid a huge contract.

Like this

Ha!!!! Yeah right. you just shot blanks into that theory AS USUAL. What is Bustnett’s ERA compared to Lee’s? Oh that’s right 4.15 to 2.92. How many HR’s has Bustnett given up compared to Cliff Lee? 17 to 11. How many BB’s has Burnett given up 52 to 27 and 13 WP to 0 WP. Lee has gone deep in games 13 (7+ innings) times compared to Bustnett’s 7 times. Prior to his last outing, Lee threw three consecutive complete game shutouts. Bustnett has none. Wow those BLANKS are really burning through this theory. JEEZ!!!!! LMAO!!!!!!

The comparison should be to Lackey if anyone.

There are plenty of options around the majors for a 4th OF’er. Cameron sucks!!!!

But at what cost and just who do you think is really available?

Like this

A 4th Of’er shouldn’t cost more than a mid-level prospect. As to who it might be, all anyone can do is speculate at this point. Maybe someone like Melky Cabrera? I’m not saying that’s going to happen though.

Chad Jennings is completely blind to the facts about Jones. It’s like he’s another mediocrity lover. Jones is complete garbage who has seen his best days pass him by. There’s nothing of value from a hitter who strikes out once in less than 3 AB’s and can hit only .210. There are better 4th OF’s around the majors that the Yanks down the road, to say that there aren’t is completely WRONG. To say that Jones is a good 4th Of’er is even more WRONG. If Crashman were smart he would cut Jones lose and try and trade for a 4th OF’er, but it is Crashman we are talking about who makes questionable personnel decisions like it was going out of style.

Like Colon and Garcia???…not always…sometimes I would agree….Maybe Brandon Laird comes up and plays well…thats who they are talking about…

Like this

Let’s face it. Posada has had his day. They can’t DH him every game. He’s not getting production. They intentionally walk Martin to get to Posada and he hits into a double play. A few years ago they were pitching around Posada and intentionally walking him because he was a threat. Obviously no longer. But who have the Yankees got to DH? Nobody really.

Like this

This is why they should at least bring up someone like Montero sometime down the road. He can fill in at catcher and DH every so often, I know that’s not what Crashman wants, but he has done just about everything he can in the minors and isn’t going to develop any more than what he is now. besides the only reason Crashman wants Montero to play everyday is because of the concerns surrounding his D, and it’s doubtful that’s going to get any better the remainder of the season.

However, we all know the Yanks will go out and get a vet bat if the DH continues to be a real problem down the road.

Like this

I agree and I believe the scouting reports on Montero have been good as far as defense..he only has 2 errors…they have been working with him for awhile on footwork and moving laterally to block balls…But we’ve seen cervelli ,so whats the big deal…hes average anyway …but Montero’s bat…all the scouts say he is going to be a real good hitter…hits to all fields, power to right center…barrels a lot of balls…doesn’t “k” a lot nor does he walk a lot…see Matt we can agree on stuff about the Yanks but you keep pounding Burnett…let it go man…pleaseeeeeee!

Like this

WOW! Is there a seat without a fannie!

Like this

Sometimes it makes me wonder, how sharp do you believe you’d be if you went through as long a wait between innings as Burnett, remember those guys he’s facing are PROFESSIONALS, they get paid huge sums to hit baseballs. The Rays will hit you and don’t care if you’re AJ Burnett or Roy Halladay, they will hit the baseball.

Like this

That’s just a sad excuse for failures. Since Bustnett is getting paid money to be a top of the rotation pitcher his job is to get outs no matter what and put together solid seasons. Unlike guys like Lee and Halladay, Bustnett has never done that since coming to the Yankees. he’s been a complete bust.

Like this

What about Lackey Matt?

Like this

Hey YankMeister…please make your arguments consistent…you can’t compare Burnette to Halladay and Lee…probably the 2 top pitchers in the game..whats next Cy Young, or sandy koufax, whitey ford maybe…lmao…make up your mind…Burnette is compared to Lackey….a 2nd or 3rd pitcher…they make equal money, in fact, lackey gets more than Burnette and most everybody would agree that AJ is better…make your comparisons consistent…Bottom line Burnette has 8 wins and could have 11 very easily…If he pitches this way in the second half, he ends up with 15 or 16 wins..a very good season…I’m very happy, in fact, ecstatic with the yanks starting staff, including Burnette. AJ has been far from a complete Bust…couldn’t be farther from the truth and you know it…Enjoy the great win and Jeter accomplishment and quit with the AJ bashing….not today!!!

Like this

itdibo020,

Once again you miss the point. I wasn’t comparing Bustnett to anyone in terms of talent or results. The results for Bustnett are just not there. You are out of your mind if you are happy with what he has done so far since coming to the Yankees 10-15 5.00+ ERA and a mediocre 13 win season. The point is he is getting paid to be a top of the rotation pitcher, NOT a middle of the rotation pitcher. How much SIMPLER does it have to get for you. He has pitched like this in the first half of each of the previous two seasons with the Yankees. BIG DEAL!!!!!! Do you even watch any Yankee games?OBviously the end results DON”T bear out anything you have said as he has yet to get anything close to 16 wins. Obviously, since the only thing you can base your argument on is nothing but “If’s”, it’s a WEAK and FLAWED argument. ANYONE can do that. Yeah, “if” the Yankees were able to beat the Sox they would be in a much better position in the standings. “If” the Yankees offense were more consistent, they would be running away with this division. “IF”, “if”, “if”. Yeah, BLAH!! BLAH!! BLAH!!!

Yeah, Bustnett has really been worth his contract wit ha solid .500 record at 31-31 4.00+ ERA. Yeah every team should go out and blow $80+ million on a pitcher who produces those type of numbers highlighted by that 10-15 seaon. AJ hasn’t been a complete bust? Pffffffft, yeah right.

Again take your mancrush on mediocrity to the Royals board.

That’s R-O-Y-A-L-S!!!!!

Like this

Yeah, LAckey has been terrible with the Sox, but since mediocrity lovers like yourself like to make excuses, LAckey has been hurt this year as he has been pitching with a bad elbow. They are talking about TJ surgery for him, plus he pitches in a much more difficult park than Yankee stadium. What has been Bustnett’s excuse?

Like this

So I take it you don’t like Burnette…lmao

Was I that OBVIOUS?

By the way Robert I don’t happen to agree with Chad Jennings on Andruw Jones. He strikes out too much and doesn’t get the clutch hits. He’s almost a sure out for the side every time he gets up to bat and he looks bad doing it.

Like this

No surprise.

Bustnett does what he does best, gives up a home run. Home runs and walks end up doing Burnett in. Discouraging for a team that gets ahead and then its pitcher gives up a home run with a runner on and gives away the lead. It happens too often to Burnett unfortunately. I thought maybe with the momentum of Derek getting his 3,000 that we were going to pull this one out regardless of the lineup but not sure now. Congrats Derek on hit #3,000 and against a very good pitcher and a home run. Done in style.

The old nemesis–leaving guy on base and not getting them in. Andruw Jones is useless and I’ve been saying it all year and we haven’t gone out yet to get a good utility outfielder who can hit. Jones is not going to get it done. This was a poor off season pick up for the Yankees. His best years are way behind him offensively and defensively. And we sent Dickerson down to the minors. Cashman is going to have to do something to plug this hole in the outfield after the All Star game. We can’t go the rest of the year witH Jones as a backup outfielder. How often do we have to see him to know he’s no good.

Like this

“The fan base seems to be especially down on Jones, but as a platoon player who’s primary responsibility is to hit for power against lefties, he’s been pretty good. He’s been as good as any affordable alternative, anyway”.-Chad Jennings

WE’re in trouble in this series against the Rays with ARod and Swish out of the lineup and if ARod is out long term Nunez is not ARod let’s face it. He has potential and has a little bit of pop at the plate but struggles defensively. This is not a good time to lose these kind of players with us 1 game behind the Sox and only 3 up on the Rays. This could end up being our season right here. I’m not optimistic today with Price on the mound and the lineup we’ve got. We could end up getting swept in this series. And one wonders which AJ will show up today.

Getting swept would push us more to add a player!
