Game 86: Yankees vs. Rays

About five or six years ago, Derek Jeter was leafing through the Yankees’ media guide with some of his teammates down in Spring Training when he realized that no player in franchise history had ever amassed 3,000 hits.

Jeter considers himself something of an amateur team historian, having grown up as a Yankees fan, but it’s fair to say that stat blew him away.

“That was mind-boggling to me, because of the history of this organization,” Jeter said.

Now, Jeter gets his first chance to reach the milestone at home. It should be a festive atmosphere tonight, as Jeter leads off for New York against the Rays’ Jeff Niemann.

They have a little history: Niemann gave up Jeter’s 2,721st hit on Sept. 9, 2009, tying Lou Gehrig for the all-time Yankees record. Jeter is 5-for-9 against Niemann, with three of those hits coming that day.

“A couple years ago, when I was approaching Gehrig, the crowd was outstanding,” Jeter said. “The thing that stands out is the day I did it [on Sept. 11], how much it rained; how many fans actually stayed in the Stadium and stuck around for the game. I would anticipate it being pretty animated.”

Here are tonight’s lineups:

RAYS (48-39)
Ben Zobrist 2B
Matt Joyce RF
Evan Longoria DH
Casey Kotchman 1B
B.J. Upton CF
John Jaso C
Sean Rodriguez 3B
Sam Fuld LF
Reid Brignac SS

Pitching: Jeff Niemann RHP (3-4, 5.05)

YANKEES (51-34)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C
Brett Gardner LF

It’s always nice to see ex-Yankees make the All Star team: Tyler Clippard & Lance ‘the Babe Jr” Berkman.

Hello 2nd place. Get used to looking up @ the blosox. Since Cashman likes retreads, why not go after Fartsworth again. His stats are better so far this season than his entire time w/ the Yanks.

I’m with agreement with you Robert. Record setting becomes a distraction for most teams. Not making any excuses for the last three losses. Been outhit and outpitched in all three. Just hope the Captain gets two hits in his first two AB’s tomorrow night so this team can focus on finishing strong before the All-Star game. NL got helped today with Mo. deciding to sit out the game.

Sorry. I heard someone had hit a homer while I was commenting here but it wasn’t ARod. It was Cano. Arod probably struck out again. After tonight if we don’t come back and it doesn’t look promising, we’re going to be in 2nd place and the Rays are going to be breathing down our neck. Having been up on the Sox 2 1/2 games we’re now looking at falling behind. Both pitching and hitting has been off in the Indians series and tonight. We need to get back on track and fast.

AROD strikes out with 2 men on base and then hits a homer with noone on base. It seems that this has happened too often this year. At this point the Yankees need runs and they’re running out of time.

ARod comes off the ball when he swings instead of following through on it. It’s like a golfer who comes off the ball instead of following through and he’s an easy strike out. Not swinging the bat with any power or consistency at this point. It looks like the Yankees had men on in the early innings but couldn’t capitalize and now Neimann is settled in they can’t hit him and Colon hasn’t been the Colon we’ve seen this year. Yankees don’t look like a desperate hungry team tonight.

I hope Jeter can get his 3 hits tonight and end the circus. Everyone way too focused on his getting 3000 and it has become a distraction lately and will be until he gets it. It’s more important for the Yankees to win games.

You and Girardi both! (And Jeter, too, truth be told)

Not vintage Colon so far tonight. The Rays are all over his fast ball which is his bread and butter pitch. This could be a long night for the Yankees unless they can figure out Niemann and get some runs. This series is critical to the Yankees staying in 1st place in the Division. They’re getting guys on base but the old nemesis–they can’t get them home.
