Game 84: Yankees at Indians

It’s a steamy summer night here in Cleveland as the Yankees send ace CC Sabathia to the mound against his former club, which counters with Carlos Carrasco here under the lights.

Isn’t it funny that Sabathia said that he was more nervous in his last start against the Milwaukee Brewers, a blip on his career radar, than at any point facing the Tribe? Of course, both of those uniforms are well behind Sabathia, who probably should have been an All-Star this year but instead went down as a notable snub.

“I think CC has enough motivation all the time when he goes out there, but it could [motivate him],” manager Joe Girardi said. “He might want to show people, I’m the league leader in wins and I belong on the All-Star team, but I don’t think CC ever gets caught up in that.”

Here are tonight’s lineups:

YANKEES (50-33)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira DH
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada 1B
Brett Gardner LF
Francisco Cervelli C

Pitching: CC Sabathia LHP (11-4, 3.05)

INDIANS (45-38)
Michael Brantley LF
Asdrubal Cabrera SS
Travis Hafner DH
Carlos Santana 1B
Orlando Cabrera 3B
Grady Sizemore CF
Austin Kearns RF
Cord Phelps 2B
Lou Marson C

Pitching: Carlos Carrasco RHP (8-4, 3.54)

Montero is on 7 day DL right now…don’t know the injury…he just had a 7 for 14 streak with 2 hrs and 7 rbis…he seems to heat up when the weather warms

Just because Crashman wants to see Montero play everyday in the minors , does’t mean he will. Don’t be surprised to see him in the majors this season as a backup simply because there won’t be a better option, especially with what this team has now at catcher. Martin has been one of Crashman’s typical mediocre FA pickups and has struggled with the bat this year hitting only .219 with Francisco Cervelli as his backup hitting only .214. That’s not acceptable. If they do bring up Montero Cervelli could be included in some type of trade package, God knows he’s not worth anything in a one-for- one deal so Cervelli is expendable.

The only reason Montero is STILL in the minors is because of his D which at best is questionable. Heck, he isn’t even as good as Cervelli, but that’s ok since most people see Montero as a 1B or OF (RF). I’m not saying he’s going to beat out anyone to be the starting catcher any time soon, but who knows, at least he will get some experience at the major league level and the Yanks will be able to see what they have. Better to get him the experience now rather than later, it would be a bad idea to have an inexperienced, unknown like Montero thrown into the fire and trying to handle a major league staff. Besides most teams would prefer a bat like his and overlook a poor glove. The only thing so bothersome about Montero is that his power numbers are down from last season in Trenton.

thanks Robert for the update on Montero. You know the minor leagues much better than I do. I’m only going on hearsay and other bloggers comments. Hopefully Martin will be able to catch most games and doesn’t get injured again. Good news on Joba. I guess I was hoping he’d be back this year to help in the late innings down the stretch. We’ll miss him as an 8th inning set up for Mo especially if we don’t get Soriano back.

Love to see Montero at the minimum get a little taste…I think hes kind of earned it…at least just looking at his stats i think his defense has improved..just 2 errors I see..

The Yankee brass want Montero to play every day. Not sit on the bench as Martins backup. I’d love to see him get some MLB swings this year, but unless Cervelli is traded (and his value isn’t high) this won’t happen until maybe September. As far as defense I would describe Montero as Cervelli like, without his agility!
.
Since Joba didn’t have the usual elbow pain and is reportedly able to bend the elbow already, I heard rumors he just may be back for Spring Training 2012. That would be fantastic for everyone but Seeknay!

PS: If you want to see Montero for yourself, MiLB.TV is only $6.99 a month or $29.99 for the full season. 2011 is my third year of subscription!

Need to bring Montero up after the all star game and give him a go at catching behind Martin. Cervelli does not have any power and has a poor batting average and defensively he’s not great either. I don’t think he’s the future of the Yankees at that position, at least i hope not. Why not give Montero a try now and see how he fits in? Eventually they need to send Cervelli back to he minors or include him in a trade.

Sure CC should be at the All star game. He’s not only the Yankees ace but is the best left hander in the league right now. He domintes every game he pitches in no matter who the Yankees are playing.

Finally got a blog for tonight’s game we can comment on. CC still pitching a strong game with run support. Needs to hold the tribe and hopefully get into the 8th inning before the relievers come in. No Mo tonight by the sound of it so hopefully Robertson can get it done. Wonder when we’r going to get Chamberlain back. Haven’t heard anything lately about his recovery or prediction when he can resume pitching.
