Game 83: Yankees at Indians

It’s a pleasant, breezy night here in Cleveland as the Yankees come to town for a three-game series, the second leg of a six-game trip after crossing borough lines to take two of three from the Mets at Citi Field.

And this one, as if you didn’t already know, is all about Derek Jeter. The captain is back in the lineup tonight, batting leadoff and playing shortstop, as his chase for 3,000 hits resumes. It’ll be his first Major League action since June 13, also against the Indians, and Jeter says that six hits away doesn’t feel particularly close.

“It’s been three weeks inbetween hits,” Jeter said. “It doesn’t really [feel close] right now because my focus has been on trying to get back.”

Jeter draws Cleveland’s Josh Tomlin, against whom he’s 2-for-6 lifetime. Meanwhile, the Yankees look for a strong and long outing from A.J. Burnett, who has won two of his last three starts.

“We need some distance out of him, because our bullpen has been used a lot lately,” Joe Girardi said.

The Yankees optioned outfielder Chris Dickerson to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, clearing a spot for Jeter on the active roster. Girardi said that Eduardo Nunez’s slight hamstring issue wouldn’t force him to the DL, but it seems to have kept Ramiro Pena around for a little bit longer.

Here are tonight’s lineups:

YANKEES (50-32)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C

Pitching: A.J. Burnett RHP (8-6, 4.05)

INDIANS (44-38)

Travis Hafner DH
Carlos Santana C
Grady Sizemore CF
Orlando Cabrera 2B
Lonnie Chisenhall 3B

too bad we have to comment at the end of last night’s comments. Where’s the blog for tonight’s game? Someone isn’t on it. We need to stop the name calling and criticizing each other’s opinions or comments. We can have our own opinion and make our own comments and that should be respected. It might be different from someone else’s but we don’t need to start a character assassination over people’s comments on the game or Yankee personnel or management decisions. That’s how we have chased people off this blog in the past. it’s good we have so many now commenting so let’s not ruin it by name calling. Good healthy debate and disagreement is a good thing. Let’s appreciate our differences. Good old CC comes through again. What would we do without him to right the ship every time he pitches. He’s certainly our stabilizing ace in the rotation. And we’ve given him some runs which the team doesn’t do very often for AJ. Why? who knows. Anyone have any answers as to why a team scores run for one pitcher and not another?

yeah right, Bustnett a “solid No.4″ proves he was worth his contract. NOT!!!!! When do teams spend $80 million on No.4’s, especially ones who go 10-15 5.00+ over the course of a season. Further proof Bustnett is a bust. However, I would take this staff over last season’s. Hmmmm, the Giants rotation had no problems against AL teams this year, albeit they weren’t worldbeaters. I would definitely take Cain, Baumgarner, and Lincecum. Hmmmm, seems that the Giants went head-to-head with the AL East last season and more than held their own against the AL East teams. Only reason they were less than .500 was because they had a terrible offense, that’s already been established. Other than that they held up quite well against these teams. For the Giants, a pitcher with a low-4.00 era would be pretty poor by their standards.

Allan…I totally agree…excellent post….couldn’t have said it better myself and thanks for the research on the run support…appreciated…

According to some interesting stats, granted garnered from ESPN through Google, but have some fun with this

Average Run Support per game regular season 2011
Ivan Nova – 9.03 (incidentally, that ranks him third highest in MLB)
CC Sabathia – 8.54 (for 6th!)
Freddy Garcia – 7.04
AJ Burnett – 6.02
Bartolo Colon – 5.23

Looking at that figure, it’s not happening this season is it, of the Yankees starters who’s figures are recorded on the site (Hughes obviously omitted due to lack of data) only Colon has worse run support. (admittedly his era being significantly lower) Say what you like about him, yes he’s inconsistent, yes he has an inflated ERA, yes he is capable of being as wild as he can be good, but here’s the newsflash – YOU CANNOT WIN BALLGAMES WITHOUT RUN SUPPORT. He plays in the AL, he can’t go out there, grab a bat & do it himself, he’s reliant on 9 guys to help him win ball games, and last night, they didn’t produce.

Then you look at it from last night’s perspective, 7 innings, 4 hits, 4 earned – you had a situation whereby if A-rod leaves a popup to it’s rightfull play-maker (LF) then that line reads ZERO earned. I’m not blaming A-rod for the loss, but ultimately if that ball is caught, you’re probably looking at a Yankees win – catch wasn’t made simple as that, the defense cost him an out on that play.

AJ frustrates you because you know when he’s good, he’s awesome, but when he’s bad he’s BAD – but pitching is half the story of how the ballgame is won or lost, the issue is far too many of you read the spiel on the back rather than reading the book. Honestly folks, just because it says L: Burnett in your boxscore doesn’t mean that AJ lost you the game, it means he was the pitcher of record, with 1 simple change of fact which AJ had ZERO control over he landed beside that L.

(incidentally, source: http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/pitching/_/maxage/40/sort/runSupportAvg/count/41/qualified/true/type/expanded-2)

After watching the 7th, AJ certainly deserved a better fate. He didn’t look near as bad as the comments lead me to believe!
.
And that pop-up could have resulted in a disastrous collision! Better to stay away from it than lose more than a single game!

Like

I’m sure the Giants fans will disagree with you on not winning without run support. They did it last season and are doing it again this year, although I don’t think they will win the series this year since you can’t win if you can’t score,. We all know that good pitching is only half the formula to being a successful team.

Like

Also, even though stats don’t give you the whole story and can be misleading, those are just excuses and are ALL APART OF THE GAME. Hmmmm, I seem to remember Randy Johnson posting a season of 17 wins. Does that mean he was good that season? NOPE!!!!! His ERA was 5.00 and allowed a career high 125 runs in 1 season. So in reality Johnson sucked half the time he was here.

Like

Mitre and Vasquez last year…I’ll take this group this year and if Burnette is a solid #4…I’ll take that also…I don’t have much complaints about Burnette this year….at least not yet….Lets wait for him to get shelled in the 3rd inning before we go crazy here….We are in every game he pitches with chances to win….Yes Giants are in a real tough division? there…dodgers…padres..colorado sucks…arizona…there ok….seems a rather easy division to win…I think its hard to compare to the AL east, where good pitchers have a low 4 ERA…just my opinion though and pitching wins, no doubt and the yanks are a prime example….our pitchers keep us in games….agreed

I would NOT get personal with the attacks dumb ass. Errors are part of the game. Everytime an error occurs Bustnett implodes. I’ll give you the ONE game vs. the Phils. BFD. The guy is a 35 year old immature jerk whose record speaks for itself. Once again his inability to put mistakes aside and FOCUS causes walks and then the meatball served up to Kearns. THOSE are NOT Girardi or ARODs fault. Those errors rest with AJ. He is the Yankee version of Carlos Zambrano without the explosion/mouth. 31-31 end of discussion.

Like

And now we go down another notch to name calling! Come on Seek, you’re better than that. Where’s that Oklahoma courtesy?

Like

But Arod should of had that ball and inning is over, we disagree with you…line should read 7 inn and no runs…pretty easy play also..watched it 5 times…can of corn for Gardner….don’t understand your reasoning….how is Burnette “immature”….Also, why are you so mad?..Burnette has pitched well this year and deserves a better fate…he pitched a nice game here…it was only 2-0 and inning should of been over…THATS GOOD PITCHING!!! PERIOD!!!
get over it dude!!!

Like

You’re right seeknay. Errors themselves can’t be placed on the pitcher, but it’s how that pitcher responds to that adversity that matters more. It’s STILL the pitcher’s job to shut down the other side without letting them score regardless of the errors in the field. So FORGET about the EXCUSES or the “what ifs” or the “woulda’s” “shoulda’s”, or “coulda’s”. The don’t feed the bull dog!!!!!

There’s no doubt that Bustnett has been a flat out bust since coming to the Yankees, all anyone has to do is look at his overall numbers. Looking at the full picture is the best way and correct way to evaluate a player, not by looking at one season or one game.

Who defines a player by doing that? That’s crazy!!!

With that being said though, Bustnett did deserve a better fate in this game.

Like

From what I read, AJ was one pitch away from ending the seventh and with both Ayala and Rivera unavailable, I can’t blame Joe for choosing a fading AJ over Logan, Mitre, Noesi, or Pendleton.

Like

I like how Girardi decides that 110 pitches is not enough for Burnette to throw….after you walk 2, let the other team have 4 outs because of arod and Duncan gets a cheap flair to right, it would of been nice to have gotten AJ out with a lead and a high pitch count….but Clueless blew another game!!!
Even the Yankee announcers on YES said that Kearns had hit 2 rockets his last 2 ab’s….does girardi actually watch these games???

Like

Arod missed a pop up and they got 4 outs that inning…watch the game…try to be fair and then comment…don’t jump on your soapbox with this nonsense….Also ask the Phillies from 2009 if they did well against Burnette in the World Series when he shut them down…..ah no…not so well
Yanks led 2-0 thanks to Burnette and Arod made an error…..notice you did not read what I said again…..no use even commenting to your dumb ass posts….
If it makes you happy they did overpay for Burnette….but pitchers that give you innings and keep you in games are not cheap
Lackey pitches for the red sox and they have 3-4 years more of that guy….
I’d rather have Burnette…

Like

The notch started here. For shame!

Are you serious? I’ll take LAckey over Bustnett any day of the week. You should ask the Yanks if Bustnett did well last season. Ummmm, NOPE!!!! Ask if he has been worth his $80+ million contract . Ummmmmm, NOPE!!!!!! LAckey has not pitched well in Boston and he definitely has not shown that he is worth his contract either, but at least he has a far better track record of success while Burnet has only been able to win more than 12 games only twice in his career. The Yanks didn’t get Bustnett simply to “give them innings” and “keep them in games”. You CAN get pitchers who can do that at a much cheaper rate, i.e. Colon and Garcia. The A’s, and Giants staffs are loaded with that type of pitching as is the major leagues as a whole. All those guys have and are putting together better seasons than Burnett.

So what!!! Burnett put a good outing together, like I said before, he is just repeating the same pitching patterns he has set for himself since signing with the Yanks. Get a grip and put that Cy Young award away.

Like

SIGH!!!!!! Are you still on your Flores kick? Why don’t you just ask the Yankees for his home number that way he can be your personal dance partner? JEEEEZ!!!!!

As James Mason once stated in The Verdict, “never ask a question you cannot answer.” So I’ll answer my own question. AJ is 31-31 with the Yankees in the years he has worn the pinstripes. Not sure this guy is worth the $$$ they have overpaid for him.

What game you watching Itdibo? Or are you going to blame the two walks on the catcher and the meatball he threw to Kearns, a HUGE HR hitter. Typical Bustnett, 6 innings of greatness and watch the implosion. Again I ask who are the Yankees getting their money out of, AJ or Colon? Maybe instead of sending Nova down to AAA Girarid and company ought to consider trading AJ away. However, for the overpriced amount they are paying this guy NO ONE would bite. One final note does this guy have a winning record while with the Yankees?

Arod gets 32 million…twice as much as Burnette…yes 32 million ..can he catch a pop up and not make his pitcher get 4 outs????….watch the games and stop blaming a pitcvher that threw a gem…sheesh…watch Lackey today…he got more money than Burnette…2inn 7 runs and his era is 7.87…go crack on the red sox…

Bustnett has no one to blame but himself for this loss. 2 walks and a passed ball in the inning. He implodes AGAIN. How many times have we seen this out of this guy??? Yankees paying Colon $900,000 and Bustnett $16 million. You tell me Yankee fans who is earning his pay and who is the better deal. Great job tonight A Jerk.

Too much hoopla with Jeter coming back. Too many distractions. They were winning without him. Might have been better for the team if Nunez had stayed in. Not sure if his injury would allow him or not. But the team was ina groove and now the chemistry has been shaken up. it often happens that way. Hopefully the next game they’ll get down to business and back to work.

Like

Robert, I totally agree with that, I liked the swisher/ gardner thing we had going…we were jumping ahead of teams in the first…also taking nunez out when hes scolding hot is bad…of course he is hurt so probably wouldn’t have mattered. I just don’t like this Jeter thing we have seen the last 2 years…where he swings at balls with a 2-0 count that are high and in and hits a soft fly to right…I have seen it at least 50 times….just giving away an at bat….to hit .300 he has to get in a hitters count and swing at strikes…then he becomes a real good hitter….its the first game back, so I think its only fair to wait here…but I really didn’t see anything different from when he left.

Like

great. Yankee relief blow another game. Ayala last night and Wade tonight. And we wouldn’t have needed either if Mo had closed out and if Burnett hadn’t given up the home run to Kearns. Kearns? Couldn’t do anything for the Yankees last year and now comes back with a low batting average to hit a home run and win the game. That’s justice foryou.

Like

Grandy homers but noone on base. Both hitters before Granderson don’t get on base and instead of picking up 2 or 3 runs we only get 1. Now relief needs to hold the Indians at 4 and hopefully pick up a run or two in the 9th. It’s going to be hard to get because the Indians are going to send in their closer and the closer is always there for a reason unless he blows a save like Mo did in the last game.

I’m concerned the yankees are looking ahead to the All Star game and break already and not going to really do the work necessary to win these next two series. If so, they could be falling out of 1st place before the break.

Like

Hows it ok to not hit lead off or even start a game because a lefty is pitching but its fine to lead off the 8th inning vs one of the toughest lefty relievers in the league…makes no sense…and its not fair to the player

Like

Hey Yankee fans…get this one…heres why Girardi is clueless….8th inning down by 2 runs…Gardner never starts vs lefties is leading off…at least thats the clueless thought process…..so he lets Gardner bat vs one of the toughest lefties vs left handed pitching in the league(.095)….and you wonder why he is clueless….he does this all the time…of course gardner struck out….

Like

ARod is not getting it done in the field or at the plate tonight. Not sure why he is going to the All Star game given his low power numbers this year.

Like

Burnett broke more than Tomlin. Girardi probably left AJ in an inning too long which is often the case with Girardi. Burnett is usually good for 6 innings and then the opposition get to him and he starts losing his stuff. Mind you the Yankees don’t give him much run support either. 3 hits and 2 runs is not going to do it for most teams. Whether the Yankees can pull this out in the last 2 innings will be interesting to see. Otherwise they lose 2 in a row.

Like

How does Girardi let this game get away from Burnette…didn’t you watch Kearns last 2 at bats vs Burnette….or is just the yankee announcers that saw the 2 rockets he hit…..Loss for Girardi not Burnette….

Like

Thanks Arod…..if you can’t catch pop ups why not get out of the way…you got the best outfielder in baseball in left field….they should charge the 4 runs to our lousy 3rd baseman…

Like

Lets get AJ a few runs here…sheesh…..making Tomlin look real good here…lets get busy

Like

so far it’s a pitcher’s duel. Someone will have to break soon. It may end up a low scoring game with 1 or 2 runs deciding the outcome. Yankees need to put some offense together. It might not be the long ball but just playing small ball and squeezing a run across the plate which is something the Yankees team doesn’t like to do. They have lived and died by the home run largely. We need to widen the gap between the Sox and the Rays given they both lost.
