Game 81: Yankees at Mets

Good afternoon from Citi Field, as the Yankees reach the official half-way point of their season, playing game No. 81 against the Mets.

All things considered, the Yankees should be pretty happy with where they are thus far. They’ve gotten more than they could have expected from guys like today’s starter, Bartolo Colon, and come in as winners of 16 in their last 20 games.

They have a 2 1/2 game lead in the American League East and have won a season-high six straight, something they’ll try to improve on today against Dillon Gee and the Metropolitans.

“I am pleased with the way we’ve played,” manager Joe Girardi said. “I think we bounced back after some difficult losses and some difficult series. I think we’ve had guys that have stepped up and played extremely well in the absence of other players. We had a lot of injuries. We’ve had our share, to starters to relievers to position players, and guys have just found a way to get it done, and I’m proud of them for that.”

Here are today’s lineups:

July 2, 2011 – Citi Field, 4:10 p.m. ET – FOX

Well the same old Mitre that drove us nuts in relief last year. Nothing has changed much. Fortunately he did get three outs finally after allowing 2 runs. I don’t know why Girardi didn’t bring Mo in right away if all he had was Mitre able to pitch. Not sure why Cashman thinks he was worth another shot. Anyway, another win and the Yankees are on a roll with pitching and hitting. Good to see Colon pitching so great after being on the DL for 3 weeks. Interesting to see how Garcia will pitch against the Mets tomorrow.

REPEAT FROM PRIOR THREAD:
“Why not? Mitre can work in short relief, he can give you 2 or 3 innings at a time, and he really isn’t as bad as Yankees fans make him out to be. Last season, he had a 3.33 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.
Is that better than what Buddy Carlyle would have given? I’d say so.”-Donnie Collins
.
“It’s just a marginal upgrade (at best), and I think we can all agree that Mitre is better than Carlyle.”-Mike Axisa

Montero is starting to heat up and he has only made 2 errors this season…Pitchers seem to be pitching well to him also, another good sign…..good to see…Parra is playing well at scranton also…

Both Parraz and Golson had good months in June. And we know Golson has that gun he showed last year nailing Crawford in Tampa Bay!
