Jeter on his way to Trenton

Playing against the Mets has always been an enjoyable experience for Derek Jeter, but the Yankees captain won’t be on hand tonight as the Subway Series gets underway at Citi Field.

Jeter has completed the Tampa, Fla. stage of his rehabilitation from a strained calf muscle and is on his way to Trenton, N.J., where he is expected to play two games with the Trenton Thunder on Saturday and Sunday. If all goes well, signs point to Jeter possibly re-joining the big league club on Monday in Cleveland.

The Thunder host the Altoona Curve at 7:05 p.m. ET on both Saturday and Sunday. Jeter hasn’t played in the Minors since 2003, when he spent five games with Trenton.

Jeter’s workout this morning was cancelled due to soggy fields in Tampa, but two other rehabbing Yankees were able to find dry mounds to work with. Rafael Soriano threw 32 pitches off a mound Friday and could be activated July 14 at the earliest, while Pedro Feliciano also made 30 soft tosses off a mound.
