Game 71: Yankees at Reds
Hello from Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, where the Yankees will play the fourth game of this six-game road trip, opening a new series after taking two of three from the Chicago Cubs out at Wrigley Field.
It was raining pretty heavily when half the beat touched down this morning in Covington, Kentucky, but the skies have cleared and we’re looking good as baseball gets underway. Consider this half of the beat the lucky ones; several others had a mysteriously missing aircraft and couldn’t get to Cincinnati until a couple of hours before first pitch.
Brett Gardner isn’t in the lineup tonight, Joe Girardi’s decision after the Reds scratched Johnny Cueto with a stiff neck. The Reds expect to have Cueto on the mound tomorrow against Brian Gordon; for tonight, it’s Ivan Nova’s ball as the Yankees look to keep this trip rolling on the right notes.
Here’s what Girardi’s suggestion is for Nova tonight: “I think you have to be able to throw off speed in fastball counts. That’s one of the things you have to do, locate and be ahead in the count. It’s a dangerous lineup. This is also a dangerous park and you can’t afford to give them extra outs or walk people.”
Pitching: RHP Ivan Nova (6-4, 4.46)
Pitching: LHP Travis Wood (5-4, 5.11)
