Game 66: Yankees vs. Rangers

If the Yankees lineup looks a little strange to you tonight, imagine how Nick Swisher felt when his cell phone buzzed with a text message from Joe Girardi this afternoon, giving him the heads-up that he’d be leading off for the first time since 2008.

Swisher stared at the phone quizzically and showed it to his wife, actress Joanna Garcia, before shrugging and texting back, “I’m all for it.”

Girardi said he based the decision on Swisher’s career on-base percentage against lefties (.401), as well as his 2011 on-base percentage facing southpaws (.438). It’s a tough break for Brett Gardner, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI last night, but Gardner figures he’ll probably get into the game eventually if Andruw Jones comes out of left field.

Busy, busy day in the roster moves department. Adding right-hander Cory Wade to the roster was a little bit of a surprise, announced about a half hour before first pitch, as Kevin Whelan heads to Triple-A. Rafael Soriano was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room, which puts his target date in mid-July; Soriano has barely played catch and isn’t near a mound yet.

They’re also still planning to put righty Brian Gordon on the roster tomorrow, and it’s down to Gordon or Hector Noesi to make that start. Girardi said they might not have that all settled until late tonight.

Anyway, it’s a beautiful night here in the Bronx, about 80 degrees with a cool breeze and perfectly clear. Here are the lineups:

RANGERS (36-32)
Ian Kinsler 2B
Elvis Andrus SS
Josh Hamilton LF
Michael Young DH

Gotta think Gordon gets the nod over Noesi. The Yanks always lean towards a veteran and a AAA record of 5-0 with an ERA of 1.14 makes it a good bet for me!

another stolen base on cervelli…that’s I believe, 22 steals out of 24 attempts, I may be off a few but its close….horrendous….Montero has got to be better than this guy!!!

That was a terrible pitch-out.

Nova is off to a rocky start already and a second rate lineup tonight so look for a Rangers win.

Good Texas hitting and a walk. Then Nova shut them down!

In Nova’s defense he’s facing a very “ballsy” lineup, they’ll run on you all day every day, he’s still a very green pitcher and that’ll throw your concentration. Cervelli’s throwing though is worrying me a bit – but the pitch was high & a bit wide, still you’d like to see him improve the situation, no doubt he’s got enough catchers in the clubhouse to help him sort out the mechanics ;)

And a good job by Tex making them pay for the hbp – it was clearly unintentional, but still, no better way to avenge it than smacking one over the left field wall.

Hey Allen, good to see you back!

That should be ALLAN.

Nova in trouble every inning. Not a quality start. He has been inconsistent this year to say the least. He’s not going to last much longer but with the injuries the bull pen is hurting.

Rookies!

Hmmm, some avatar! I expected a maple leaf theme.

DP got Nova out of the inning. Boston up on the Rays 3-0

You’re right, this entire team is hurting, but what do you expect, it’s old and injury prone from top to bottom.

Don’t we have a few healthy guys under 30?

A hit for Pena!

And a double for Swish!

Grandy RBI. We’re up 3-2.

Kinsler shows his pop.

A Josh jolt!

Yeah for Bald Vinny!

Cano usually gets that out!

Down 4-3.

Oh Sisco!

Nunez blast!

Sisco was robbed!

Swish on again!

E6.

Turned two nicely.

Jones delivers the RBI.

And Sisco does the same for a 6-4 lead.

Grandy runs one down.

Out at the plate!

Pena jumps on one!

And another Tex message!

Cano adds three!

And that’s all folks, a 12-4 Win.
