Game 65: Yankees vs. Rangers

Hello from Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees will open a three-game series with the Texas Rangers tonight. They’ll be doing it without the help of Derek Jeter, who has landed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf, stalling his pursuit of 3,000 hits.

Eduardo Nunez will take over at shortstop, and though the Yankees have their work cut out with Alexi Ogando (7-0, 2.10 ERA) on the mound for the Rangers, they feel pretty good about their chances with ace CC Sabathia going tonight.

“The bottom line against the Texas Rangers, whether we had Derek in the lineup or not, is you’d better make quality pitches,” manager Joe Girardi said. “They hit the ball a long way. They have speed, they can be an aggressive offense, they can do a lot of things. You need to make your pitches on this club.”

First pitch is set for 7:40 p.m. ET, after a brief rain delay. The forecast looks like we should be able to play uninterrupted from here on.

Here are tonight’s lineups for the game, televised on MY9:

RANGERS (36-31)
Ian Kinsler 2B
Elvis Andrus SS
Josh Hamilton LF
Michael Young DH
Adrian Beltre 3B
Nelson Cruz RF
Mitch Moreland 1B
Yorvit Torrealba C
Craig Gentry CF

Pitching: Alexi Ogando RHP (7-0, 2.10 ERA)

YANKEES (36-28)
Brett Gardner LF
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira DH
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada 1B
Nick Swisher RF
Eduardo Nunez SS
Francisco Cervelli C

Pitching: CC Sabathia LHP (7-4, 3.15 ERA)

Hey Bob…did you see the line up for tonight…no Gardner leading off….last night didn’t qualify for another start evidently?…Swisher leading off!!! the struggling swisher with his blazing speed. No fastballs tonight for granderson due to no threat of stealing, bet Texas loves that….no martin…cervelli is batting 8th!!!….My prediction for tonight…Yank lose somewhere like 8 to 2…yanks get about 5 hits and there will be absolutely no stolen bases tonight and all base to base baseball unless grandy gets on and swisher is not clogging the bases in front of him….We need a manager real bad….this line-up aggravates me…that’s the best you (Girardi) can come up with??? Also Bob….I’m thinking about what you said…I want 3 speed guys at the top so hitters get more fastballs…maybe grandy 3rd…tex..arod then cano 6th…make the lineup longer??…Just throwing that out….I’d love to hear Bryan’s take on this STUPID line-up!!! where does he come up with this BS….Where??? Some book or something???

No. I didn’t see the lineup yet. I won’t start watching tonight until after 10:00 PM!

On the plus side Jeter does have that insane OBP leading off a game, but Gardner does now get another chance to make a statement for his leading off!

Also buried deep in my brain is the thought that we might switch Cano and Teixeira. I know three lefties in a row may be bad, but if Girardi has other reasons I’d love it if he’d share!

I seen some things I haven’t seen from our SS and lead off hitters in quite some time last night….Both Gardner and Nunez got hits with 2 outs!!!…How is that possible, I guess I’m used to Jeters’ .176 with runners in scoring position?…How anyone could think that gardner is not the lead off hitter we need is not watching the games for the last year and a half!!!…3 hits, bb and sb, now hitting about .360 since May 1st, his OBP is way higher than Jeters and he runs like the wind!! Love Gardner and Granderson at or near the top of the line-up, I want speed on base and Girardi should start using it…With Gardner on first, you have to throw fastballs to Grandy and look what happened, 2 run homer….If you have a runner on first who is not really a threat to steal, you can throw junk up to the plate…and that goes for any hitter thats up there…its hard to throw a slow change up with Gardner at first….Kid is hot right now and a threat…100 steals out of 125 attempts…I want guys that can get on, steal and also hit with runners on base…Gardner hit a grounder to SS last night and the SS had to move for the ball…can’t get him…too fast…love it…I also like the fact that Nunez will play for an extended time here so we can find out what hes got…we need to know what this kid can do….2 hits last night…if he hits well and fields well his trade value goes up and it may bring the starter we need….lots of good happening in Jeters absence….Maybe the lay off will help him get back to basics and review what hes been doing at the plate…hope he comes back hot!!!….Nunez is also very fast…hes a threat to go or like last night score from second on a one hop single to right,,,I loved that aggressiveness!!!
