Game 61: Yankees vs. Indians

It’s hazy and warm in the Bronx tonight, pretty much what you’d expect out of summer, as the Yankees try to get things turned after the three-game sweep from the Red Sox. Here come the Indians for the first time this year, a young team that has played well and had contributions from a nice mix of young players and veterans.

With the Yankees, the focus was again on who’s not in the lineup – Russell Martin will miss a third straight start with a stiff back, though he’s feeling better and is shooting for Sunday. Joba Chamberlain got the expected bad news and will have Tommy John surgery performed in Pensacola, Fla. on Thursday, knocking him out for at least the rest of the season.

One roster move pre-game: Kevin Whelan is in New York’s bullpen, in line to make his big league debut. Whelan, you may remember, was a closer prospect acquired from the Tigers in the Gary Sheffield trade back in November 2006. Control has been his issue, but he seems to have put it together this year (18 saves, 1.67 ERA at Triple-A). Chris Dickerson was sent down to Triple-A.

Here are tonight’s lineups:

INDIANS (34-26)
Michael Brantley LF
Asdrubal Cabrera SS
Grady Sizemore CF
Carlos Santana C
Shin-soo Choo RF
Matt LaPorta 1B
Cord Phelps DH
Orlando Cabrera 2B
Jack Hannahan 3B

Pitching: Fausto Carmona RHP (3-7, 5.33)

YANKEES (33-27)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Brett Gardner LF
Francisco Cervelli C

Pitching: Ivan Nova RHP (4-4, 4.50)

From the Yankees:

JETER METER: SS Derek Jeter has 2,990 career hits and needs 10H to become the 28th player in Baseball history to reach 3,000H…will also tie Roberto Clemente (3,000) on the all-time list.

FAMILIAR FACE: Cleveland Pitching Coach Tim Belcher surrendered Jeter’s first career hit on 5/30/95 at the Kingdome as a member of the Seattle Mariners staff…Jeter was a career .360 hitter against Belcher, going 9-for-25.

ROUGH STRETCH: The Yankees’ current homestand features 10 games against the three current AL division leaders – Boston, Cleveland and Texas who have a current combined winning percentage of .565 (105-81).

Too bad. Guys on 2nd and 3rd and Cervelli and Jeter can’t get them home. They need to keep piling onbecause a team like Cleveland can hit and get runs if they come alive. Got to take advantage of your opportunities. For Jeter he hasn’t too often this year.

Jorge is having a good night so far and his batting average is now above 200. Way to go Jorge! If he can get into the game defensively I think it will help his hitting. Hopefully he can catch a couple of games with Martin out.

didn’t see the blench clearing but it’s time for the Yankees to give the opposition the message-“We ain’t tolerating pitchers throwing at our best players”–Good for the team to show their support behind Tex. Boston almost blew out is knee on a hit pitch and Boston was picking off our guys all series. Now Cleveland comes in and tries to do the same thing. Good to give the message right at the beginning of the series. Don’t do it or we’ll come after you. And especially in their home park. Good start tonight. Let’s hope Nova can hold the lead and the Yankees can build on it. Go Yanks!
