Game 45: Yankees vs. Mets

Hello from an overcast Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees and Mets are set for the rubber game of this installment of the Subway Series, as Ivan Nova and Mike Pelfrey get the nods in a matchup of young right-handed starters.

The Yankees had a late report time to the ballpark this morning, and Joe Girardi had to wait for a while so he could check with some banged-up players before sending Rob Thomson out to post the lineup card. When it went up, Chris Dickerson was in right field, playing in place of Nick Swisher – thus far hitless in six at-bats against the Mets this weekend.

As far as the all-or-nothing offense the Yankees have been showing, Girardi had a funny line, demonstrating how little concern he has that 52.2 percent of the team’s runs have come via the homer: “I don’t care how we score runs. I don’t care if they kick the ball 10 times.”

Here are the lineups:

METS (22-23)
Jose Reyes SS
Daniel Murphy 1B
Carlos Beltran DH
Jason Bay LF
Fernando Martinez RF
Justin Turner 2B
Willie Harris 3B
Ronny Paulino C
Jason Pridie CF

Pitching: Mike Pelfrey RHP (3-3, 5.11 ERA)

YANKEES (24-20)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada DH
Brett Gardner LF
Chris Dickerson RF
Francisco Cervelli C

Pitching: Ivan Nova RHP (4-3, 4.33 ERA)

From the Yankees’ official game notes –

AT A GLANCE: Today the Yankees will play the rubber game of a three-game series vs. the Mets at Yankee Stadium…this marks the Yankees’ first Interleague series of the year and the third game of a six-game homestand that also includes three games vs. Toronto from Monday-Wednesday (are 1-1 thus far)…completed a four-game road trip with a 3-1 mark, going 1-1 at Tampa Bay on Monday-Tuesday and sweeping two games at Baltimore on Wednesday-Thursday…following this homestand, have an off day on 5/26 and a nine-game, 10-day road trip to Seattle (5/27-29), Oakland (5/30-6/1) and Los Angeles-AL (6/3-5)
Are 24-20 (.545), tied for first in the AL East with Tampa Bay (25-21, .543)…have regained at least a share of first place in the division for the first time since 5/11.

FINISHING LINES: Yankees relievers have a 2.68 combined ERA (117.2IP, 35ER) since 4/7, marking the lowest in the AL and third-lowest in the Majors over the stretch (San Diego-2.04, Washington-2.49)…have not allowed more than 3ER in any game over the span.

ALEXCELLENT: 3B Alex Rodriguez is batting .409 (9-for-22) with 6R, 1 double, 3HR, 3RBI and 1BB in his last five games.

DRIVE TIME: 1B Mark Teixeira has 7RBI over his last three games (5/19-21) immediately following a stretch of just 6RBI over his previous 25 games from 4/20-5/18.

ol hickory: You’re right on getting key hits with runners in scoring position. We lose out on a lot of opportunities and when the long ball is working for us we can win but we don’t knowhow to play small ball and get a rally going when we need one. A number of our guys are nearing the end of their career and are in their mid thirties and the organization is going to make some important decisions in the next year or two. We can’t continue to buy players, although so far Colon and Garcia and Martin have been good risks and have paid off. Hopefully they can play the full season without injury. We can only hope for a Rays and Red Sox loss tonight.

Robert, If you don’t score you can’t win. We have a big problem of not putting our hits together. We are too dependent on the long ball. Last nights game was a fluke when we were putting men on base and moving them up and we did get some runs.
Robert is a nice guy who like every one of us has his opinions, But thats what drive the blog. If we all agreed it wouldn’t be the same. we need the diversity to make it interesting. Bob is a staunch Yankee fan probably more so than I.. I like that! I do learn from other bloggers although I don’t always see eye to eye with them ……We now trail 7-2 with the meat of our order coming up…..

the old story. You can’t win a game with 3 hits no matter how your pitcher pitches. When the Yankees did have men on base and had their chances they didn’t capitalize. The Jays are going to be there all year as are the Sox and the Rays. Yankees have their hands full this year to stay in contention.

On tonight’s game against the Jays. A bad management decision again by Girardi. He waited too long again to take out his starter. Colon was strong up to the 6th inning and then Girardi had him walk to batters intentionally and then Colon walks one himself and walks in a run and then Arancibia clears the bases and the Yankees are in a deep hole. He should have taken Colon out when he was getting into trouble. I wonder for a veteran pitcher if by having him intentional walk two hitters if he doesn’t feel that the manager doesn’t have confidence in him to pitch to them. It certainly wasn’t the right decision tonight. Looks like the Yankees are on their way to a loss and if the Rays win they’re a game behind again.

I’m with you Ol Hickory. I’ve been saying this for a while now. Everyone has disappeared from this site I think for various reasons. There were some bloggers here that trash talked and hid behind other aliases and had to be dropped from commenting. I think Robert has probably controlled too much what has been said on the blog and has tried to defend the Yankees against those he doesn’t particularly agree with or who are critical of the Yankees. this year Robert has almost had a one sentence dialogue with himself most nights. Also there has not been an introduction every night to the current game and tonight is an example. We’re still back at the last game with the Mets. I’ve stuck it out in spite of the fact most others have left. One or two from the past have dropped by once in a while but not as consistently as they once did. Is Bryan using twitter more?

Bob,
I have no way of controlling anything on this blog
.
And when you trash talk management or players here, you don’t like it if I defend them. I certainly am sick and tired of your constant complaining and I know several who have left because of it.
.
It laughable that you don’t realize you are part of the problem!

This site by Bryan Hoch, Was at one time the premier Yankees blog, that was until the trash talking riff raff came aboard and took over and changed the atmosphere. They stopped talking baseball and it changed everything. I noticed one by one all the regulars were dropping away..Voila! no one was left. I’m going to be gone awhile but when I return I hope to find Bombers Beat coming back to it’s former status on top… I’d like to see some of those from 3 years ago returning, They had some intelligence and kept things interesting… Opinions welcome!!

Let’s go Yankees We’re not playing smart baseball. We need some big hits, not necessarily the HR but getting and base and moving them up to score (Small ball0 Just as the Mets did..

I looked at the standings today and I see the BOSOX nearing the top. Yes, it’s close but we are not playing good and consistent baseball. So unless we get our act together it’s going to be a really long long season Only the division winner will get to the playoffs…I didn’t realize how bad we are until this:
In todays paper an article by Phil Rogers (Tribune) He made the revelation that since last August the Yankees have played .500 baseball. Article shows W57 L54. I don’t know when that column was written. Looking at those #s it doesn’t look promising. Our bats have be silent too long and we seem like we are just going through the motions. It’s long ball or maybe miss hit a double if they’re lucky. Tex with his upper cut swing tells you exactly what he’s thinking. They seem to be playing the game more for personal gratification and not for the team!
In the same article he mentions the Mets tradiing Reyes, One thing is certain, The Yanks can’t let them (Bosox) get him unless we start to retool for next year.. We may have to get involved in a 3 way trade to prevent them from attaining him……
