Game 15: Yankees at Blue Jays

Hello from north of the border (nord des lignes?*) as the Yankees visit the Toronto Blue Jays for the first game of a brief two-game series.

Alex Rodriguez is not in New York’s lineup tonight, as the team has decided to give him one more day to rest the lower back and oblique stiffness that he has been fighting since Saturday. A-Rod said he expects to play tomorrow, but with a team off-day on Thursday, they have a built-in excuse to give him even more rest if he needs it.

A-Rod made a great point about Eric Chavez, who’s filling in at third base. With Chavez and Andruw Jones, the Yankees have 16 Gold Gloves on their bench.

A.J. Burnett gets the ball tonight against one of his former teams. Burnett is off to the quick start that the Yankees were hoping he could piece together, entering tonight’s action with a 3-0 record and a 4.67 ERA through three starts.

“The big improvement has been in the location of his pitches, to me, his ability to get out of innings when he’s gotten into some trouble,” manager Joe Girardi said.

A few injury updates:  Colin Curtis has had season-ending surgery on his separated shoulder. The rehab process didn’t go well, and now he’ll shoot for next spring. Also, Francisco Cervelli is on the way back. He caught yesterday in extended Spring Training and could get back behind the plate for Class-A Tampa on Friday.

Canada’s own Russell Martin got a lot of publicity today pre-game from the local media. He’s sure he had a few ticket requests coming to him from friends and acquaintances, but unfortunately Martin forgot his cell phone in New York. They’ll have to get into the ballpark the old-fashioned way.

Here are tonight’s lineups:

YANKEES (9-5)

Derek Jeter SS, Curtis Granderson CF, Mark Teixeira 1B, Robinson Cano 2B, Nick Swisher RF, Eric Chavez 3B, Jorge Posada DH, Russell Martin C, Brett Gardner LF

Pitching: A.J. Burnett RHP (3-0, 4.67 ERA)

BLUE JAYS (7-9)

Yunel Escobar SS, Travis Snider LF, Jose Bautista RF, Adam Lind 1B, Aaron Hill 2B, Jose Molina C, Corey Patterson CF, Edwin Encarnacion DH, Jayson Nix 3B

Pitching: Kyle Drabek RHP (1-0, 1.93 ERA)

(* – I always think of that truck stop at the end of Die Hard With a Vengeance, Nord des Lignes. Not really sure why that movie had to end in Canada, but all right.)

It’s about time the Yanks started to make changes as far as “Pop Gun” Gardner goes. This guy isn’t a good leadoff hitter or a No. 9 hitter. He’s been mired in a season long slump and isn’t even hitting close to his weight. I said it several times last year, his speed won’t make much of a difference in this offense especially when he isn’t hitting. Now we are actually seeing it as proof. Also see why he was nothing more than a backup player second half of last season. Even though he has a lot of his own flaws Jones has a bat, albeit an average one, but at least he is capable of providing this team some offense which has yet to really get going this season.

Don’t be surprised to see some changes on this roster if things don’t get going soon.

Where have all the bloggers gone from this site? Last year we had a lot of regulars and it was fun to participate in it. Now it’s down to a few and many nights Robert is dialoguing with himself. Mo blew it tonight. I thought for sure going into the 9th with a 2 run lead the yankees hada sure win. I guess nothing is for sure even with Mo. He had a bad night tonight. When the Yankees could have had more runs with the bases loaded Gardner popped out. Disappointing to say the least.

Girardi left AJ in an inning too long. He got in a good 5 innings and the Yankees are leading. Take him out and bring Joba or Robertson in. Now they have to bring in the bull pen one run ahead and with the bases loaded. Bad situation to bring anyone into.

Now pop gun plays too shallow and allows the ball to be hit over his head. Man, he doesn’t get it done at bat or on the bases or in the field. Andruw Jones would do a better job than what Gardner is doing even without his speed.

Pop gun Gardner is a good name for him. Why do they continue to leave him in the lineup. He’s useless right now. He doesn’t even get on base to be able to use his speed and tonight he got thrown out stealing. He hit a lousy bunt back to the pitcher that got Martin hung up after his double. And pops out with full count with the bases loaded. There’s got to be someone in the system they can bring in to bat 9th and get some hits and runners in. Gardner is not getting it done. The Yankees had a chance to pile on last inning but Gardner didn’t get the job done. Good for Tex to give them the lead. Can they hold it? It will depend on the bull pen.
