Game 3: Yankees vs. Tigers

Sunday, April 3, 2011; 1:05 p.m. ET – Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY

TIGERS (0-2)
Austin Jackson CF, Ramon Santiago 2B, Brennan Boesch DH, Miguel Cabrera 1B, Victor Martinez C, Ryan Raburn LF, Don Kelly RF, Jhonny Peralta SS, Brandon Inge 3B

Pitching: Max Scherzer RHP (12-11, 3.50 ERA in 2010)

YANKEES (2-0)
Brett Gardner LF, Derek Jeter SS, Mark Teixeira 1B, Alex Rodriguez 3B, Robinson Cano 2B, Nick Swisher RF, Jorge Posada DH, Curtis Granderson CF, Russell Martin C

Pitching: Phil Hughes RHP (18-8, 4.19 ERA in 2010)

  • Something to watch today — Joe Girardi said he’s curious to see where Hughes’ velocity will be this afternoon. “I don’t question that it’ll hit 90. You question if it’ll be up to the 93, 94 that he was at last year. In spring 2010, his velocity was similar to what it was this year (around 88 to 90), and then all of a sudden it jumped. I saw some of our other pitchers jump velocity in our first game – [Dave] Robertson jumped a little bit, [Rafael] Soriano jumped a little bit. Sometimes that little extra adrenaline is what it takes to get going.”
  • According to STATS, LLC, Mark Teixeira is the first player to hit a three-run homer or grand slam in his team’s first two games of the season since Barry Bonds in 2002.
  • A.J. Burnett is undefeated in 11 April starts as a Yankee, going 6-0 with a 3.99 ERA.
  • Love this from the Yankees’ game notes: On April 3, 1919, Yankees outfielder Ping Bodie competed against an ostrich named Percy in a spaghetti-eating contest in Jacksonville, Fla. Bodie won the competition when Percy passed out after his 11th plate of pasta. I wonder if Nick Swisher might be interested in a similar event?

looks like Hughes is up to his old tricks of last year giving up 5 runs. Colon not having a very strong outing either. And Joba is usual Joba. Nothing’s changed with these guys. In spite of the offence from Posada the pitching lets the team down. Too bad theycoudn’t have swept but I guess 2 out o 3 against Detroit isnt bad. I guess the question is whether Hughes should be in the rotation.
