Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli has a fracture in his left foot and will be out a minimum of four weeks, manager Joe Girardi said on Friday.
Cervelli, who is on crutches and sporting a walking boot, fouled a ball off the foot during a Grapefruit League game against the Astros on Wednesday. He then took a CT scan and MRI, which were sent to New York for further evaluation.
Team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad made the evaluation.
Cervelli’s absence increases Jesus Montero’s chances of winning the backup catcher spot behind Russell Martin, who will make his first start against the Red Sox on Friday night.
Girardi said he still has no plans for Jorge Posada to catch during Spring Training.
