Rivera throws first bullpen, feels “bueno”

Mariano Rivera got on the bump this morning, throwing about 25 pitches in his first bullpen of the spring. Rivera said he was working on command and felt “bueno,” throwing to bullpen catcher Roman Rodriguez.

Rivera said he doesn’t plan to deviate much from his usual spring schedule, which has him throwing only about eight to 10 innings to get ready for the season.
Joe Girardi has said he figures Rivera will get into his first game sometime in mid-March; until then, Rivera will throw bullpens and a couple of live batting practice sessions.
In other early news…

  • Throwing live BPs today on the main field: Feliciano, Robertson, Nova, Banuelos, Wordekemper, Warren. On the back field: Betances, Anderson, Sisco, Turpen, Garrison, Mitchell.

  • Brett Gardner said he wasn’t able to bunt as much as he would have liked over the winter because of his wrist surgery, but he’s been doing it a lot here in camp with Rob Thomson and Mick Kelleher. Gardner said he believes being able to draw the infield in a few steps can help him as a weapon, and thought he got away from that skill after using it extensively in the Minors.

  • Lawrence Peter Berra has reported to camp; always good to see Yogi in the clubhouse. I do not believe he brought his glove, but his golf clubs might be in Joe Girardi’s office. They always used to be a fixture next to Joe Torre’s couch.

  • Nick Swisher goes prime time tonight. He’s doing a guest appearance on ABC’s ‘Better With You,’ playing – who else? – Nick Swisher. It was easy to get the part … you might say he has an in with one of the show’s stars, Joanna Garcia. They shot it in January.
