Mazzilli: Playing at Yankee Stadium was a thrill

Yankee Stadium was open for business on Wednesday, as the Yankees and the Public School Athletics League announced that the PSAL Championship football game will be played on that Bronx gridiron next week.

On hand was Lee Mazzilli, the former Yankee and a member of the Abraham Lincoln High School Class of 1973. Mazzilli’s alma mater will be facing off against Fort Hamilton High School, and he urged the players from both teams to embrace the game and to soak in this week:
“This is a great time to have you guys come to this stadium to play a football game. You guys have to really embrace this. This is going to be one of the highlights of your career. I was very fortunate when I came here to play when I was getting drafted. I got to play a game in Yankee Stadium, and for me, that was probably of my biggest thrills.

“To go out and play center field at Yankee Stadium and look around and see what was there — and hopefully, one day, that I was going to get to the big leagues. And I think all of you out there right now not only have a chance to go to college, but maybe to play professional football.”
