9/23 – Yankees vs. Rays

We’re getting ready to go one more time here at Yankee Stadium as the Rays and Yankees finish up their season series, the final game of this four-game set between the two American League East rivals. The Yankees’ magic number to clinch a postseason berth is three, with 10 games remaining on the schedule.

Here are tonight’s lineups:

RAYS (90-61)

B.J. Upton CF, Jason Bartlett SS, Carl Crawford LF, Evan Longoria 3B, Ben Zobrist 1B, Rocco Baldelli RF, Willy Aybar DH, Kelly Shoppach C, Sean Rodriguez 2B.

David Price LHP (17-6, 2.79)

YANKEES (92-60)
Derek Jeter SS, Nick Swisher RF, Mark Teixeira 1B, Alex Rodriguez 3B, Robinson Cano 2B, Marcus Thames DH, Jorge Posada C, Curtis Granderson CF, Greg Golson LF.
CC Sabathia LHP (20-6, 3.05)

Notes and quotes: The Yankees have Andrew Brackman in uniform, wearing No. 66, and Brian Cashman says that he’s told Joe Girardi to feel free to use him at will. Cashman also said the Yankees are looking to get Romulo Sanchez into a game before the season is over. … Derek Jeter has played in 1,376 regular season victories, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, which ties Mickey Mantle for the most in Yankees history. … Brett Gardner is just receiving a day off. Dave Robertson (lower back tightness) said he feels better and that “hopefully” he can pitch tomorrow. … The Yankees are still in the evaluating phase for their postseason roster, which means that there is a chance – however slim it may be – that a guy like Royce Ring could still do enough to work his way into the mix as a second lefty. … Amar’e Stoudemire threw out the ceremonial first pitch. … Joba Chamberlain is 25 today.

A terrible game from the Yankees. No heart. No pitching. No hitting. No getting the runners home. Poor decision making by Girardi. An all round bad game. Hopefully they won’t take this into the series with the Red Sox or it won’t be long before they’re looking up at the Rays in the standings.

Well I can tell you one pitcher that will NOT be on the postseason roster. What a JOKE!!! Maybe Girardi will sign him for the Cubs next year.

Girardi do NOT ever allow Vasquez to pitch to another batter in a Yankee uniform. Cashman ought to do Yankee fans a favor & release this bum tonite. He is a JOKE and has always been a JOKE. Vasquez ranks up there with Kevin Brown, Ed Whitson, Rick Rhoden and the rest of the NL pitchers who have been crap for the Yankees.

Back to back innings with the bases loaded and NO runs driven in. And now the BIGGEST offseason mistake Vasquez is in the game. oneof5 I’m already looking ahead to next year because I doubt this team is going to win #27 this year. Changes need to be made with this roster especially with this pitching staff. Vasquez GONE, Joba GONE (sorry robertg the guy will never get any better, wants to be a starter, send his *ss to the pirates), Gaudin GONE, AJ if you sign Lee then see if you can trade him. The biggest problem that I have noticed with this club is its manager NOT wanting to WIN. Ever since Piniella retired IMHO Joe’s mind and heart has been in Chicago. Joe if you are stupid enough NOT to get pitchers out in time then I guess you are stupid enough to take that job.

How many times are the yankees going to have the bases loaded and not be able to get the runners in. No clutch hitting. When they need the big hit they’re not getting it.
You know already what the outcome of this game is going to be. They’re just not a hungry and desperate team tonight. It feels like they’ve given up and have settled for a split.

Price has really outdueled CC tonight and the RAys have outhit the yankees. Yankees with bases loaded can’t get the runner in from 3rd base. They have not got the big hits tonight with men on base. They’ve settled for a split in the series with the Red Sox up next and no push over and always plays the Yankees hard. The Rays have much easier teams to play and so it looks like the Yankees are going to have to settle for the wild card without home field advantage. The Yankees haven’t done well on the road this year and so they are at a serious disadvantage in a best of 5 series. Chamberlain pitched his usual relief inning giving up a long double and almost home run to Upton. CC didn’t have his usual stuff tonight and as you say Seeknay Girardi did what he’s done too often and that’s leave the starter in an inning too long. it was obvious that CC was tiring and not able to locate and the home base umpire didn’t help his cause any. They’ll end up tonight like they started the series, 1/2 game up on the Rays which is a very precarious position given the teams they are both playing down the stretch. Not a good game tonight. Poor pitching and poor hitting.

An ABSOLUTE disgraceful top of the 6th. This inning epitomized this team’s futility all year. Stupid Girardi waits AGAIN too long to take CC out when it was obvious the guy was struggling. And then there is Joba the Joke. How many times does this team put up with this BUM”s inability? The guy has been a BUM since the end of his first year. Always a first pitch ball to EVERY batter. If and when this team gets eliminated from the playoffs (because right now all they are wanting is the wild card), I hope like *ell the first one sent packing after Johnson & Vasquez is Chamberlain.
