9/21 – Yankees vs. Rays

Here are the lineups from Yankee Stadium on what is shaping up as a beautiful night for baseball, with temperatures in the high 60s and a light breeze blowing the flags out toward left field…

RAYS (89-60)
John Jaso C, Ben Zobrist 2B, Carl Crawford LF, Evan Longoria 3B, Dan Johnson DH, Matt Joyce RF, Carlos Pena 1B, B.J. Upton CF, Jason Bartlett SS.
James Shields RHP (13-12, 4.86)

YANKEES (91-59)
Derek Jeter SS, Nick Swisher RF, Mark Teixeira 1B, Alex Rodriguez 3B, Robinson Cano 2B, Jorge Posada C, Lance Berkman DH, Curtis Granderson CF, Brett Gardner LF.
Phil Hughes RHP (16-8, 4.31)

Umpires - Mike Everitt (HP), Adrian Johnson (1B), Andy Fletcher (2B), Tim McClelland (CC, 3B)
  • Notes and quotes: Phil Hughes made just a couple of mistakes to Dan Johnson his last time out. Avoiding that would be a key. … Joe Girardi thinks that Derek Jeter’s swings have been much better the last seven or eight days. “If there’s a right time to get hot, this is the time,” he said. … If and when the Yankees lock up their playoff berth, expect to see Mark Teixeira get several days off to heal the bone bruise on his right hand. … Jesus Montero and Dellin Betances will be with the Yankees tomorrow for pre-game workouts, and will get to hang out for several days to get a feel for the big leagues. They won’t be added to the roster, and will watch the games from the stands.

Game turned out well for the Yankees. Hughes struggled but the pen kept the Rays at bay. IMportant here that the Yankees win as many as possible in this series with the match ups facing them down the stretch. Rays on paper seem to have a much easier stretch, playing below .500 teams however the Orioles are no push over now since Buck has taken over. And the Royals are capable of beating the better teams in a series as well. The Orioles beat the Sox again tonight. Go Yankees!

Now a poor defensive play by Gardner. Gave up on throwing the looper to left to the plate and let the guy run home. Now we’re down to a 2 run advantage. The Rays do what they always do. They chip away at you one run at a time, one base at a time, until they slip by you in the late innings or have a big inning and put the game away. I hope Javy isn’t in for the 8th. Yankees need to get one or two more insurance runs against this team. You’ve got to put them away when you have the opportunities. Lost opportunities will kill you.

There’s useless Gardner again. Grounds out with men on 2nd and 3rd. He really is bad at the plate. Probably too early for a pinch hitter and who would they put in? Kearns is not hitting either. Again, the way Gardner has been hitting I’m not sure that Golson wouldn’t be an upgrade. I don’t think he could do much worse.

Hughes is starting to look like the pitcher of late last year. He is completely frustrated and is not throwing strikes. Five walks in 4 innings is way too many. Lucky to get through four innings so far just hope he can get five under his belt for a possible win.

After CC and Andy that third and fourth postseason pitching slots are up for grabs. Thought Hughes would fill one of them but his post-All Star results are not that good. Too many walks for my taste as evident by tonite.

Seeknay: Agree with you about Hughes. I don’t have any confidence any more in Hughes starting. he gets behind hitters consistently and then has to throw hittable strikes. He gives up too many home runs. He’s turned into a 4 innings guy at the most and even the 4 innings are shaky. He’s got 90 pitches already and just into the 5th. Way too many. I think they should drop him from the rotation and give Wolsley a try again. I don’t think he could do worse than Hughes. I think Hughes has lost confidence in himself and seems rather tentative and nervous on the mound. He doesn’t ooze confidence like a Kerry Wood. Also does any one else feel like I do about Gardner at the plate? He pops out. He bunts into double plays. He strikes out. He grounds out. He doesn’t get on base enough to utilize his speed. He does alright defensively in the outfield and on the bases but at the plate he is a liability at this point.

Finally, this appears to be out playoff lineup against RHP. And there were false rumors that Andy Brackman had been called up. I’m surprised he’s not with Betances and Montero!
