The Yankees unveiled their permanent tribute to George M. Steinbrenner tonight in a pre-game ceremony, with members of the Steinbrenner family on hand for the event along with Commissioner Allan H. “Bud” Selig and, making his first appearance at the new Yankee Stadium, former Yankees manager Joe Torre.
The 7-foot-wide, 5-foot-high bronze monument has been installed in the middle of Monument Park beyond the center field fence, and weighs 760 pounds. It also has a granite base that bears Steinbrenner’s signature and the Yankees insignia.
The entire Yankees roster marched along the warning track from the dugout to a ramp erected in center field, followed by four golf carts that carried the Steinbrenner family to the unveiling.
Mariano Rivera lingered longer than most, appearing emotional as he read each word of the Steinbrenner monument. Here is the text:

GEORGE M. STEINBRENNER III
July 4, 1930 – July 13, 2010
New York Yankees Principal Owner
“The Boss”
1973 – 2010
Purchased the New York Yankees on January 3, 1973.
A true visionary who changed the game of baseball forever,
he was considered the most influential owner in all of sports.
In his 37 years as Principal Owner, the Yankees posted a Major League-best .566 winning percentage,
while winning 11 American League pennants and seven World Series titles,
becoming the most recognizable sports brand in the world.
A devoted sportsman, he was Vice President of the United States Olympic Committee, a member of  the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors and a member of the NCAA Foundation Board of Trustees.
A great philanthropist whose charitable efforts were mostly performed without fanfare, he followed a personal motto of the greatest form of charity is anonymity.

I started to say “Rest In Peace, Boss” but “rest” just doesn’t belong in the same sentence as your name or even your nickname. I bet you’re already running things behind the scenes in heaven. Farewell.
