9/19 – Yankees at Orioles

Tim Britton here for the series (and season) finale between the Yankees and Orioles. New York is 13-4 against Baltimore this season, so a win today would give the Yanks their best record against the O’s since 1985, when they went 12-1. A loss, and they’d equal last year’s 13-5 mark.

The big news, of course, is Andy Pettitte taking the hill for the first time in two months and a day, hoping to show off the form that made him an All-Star earlier this year.
Here are Sunday’s lineups:

YANKEES (90-58)
Brett Gardner LF, Derek Jeter SS, Lance Berkman 1B, Robinson Cano 2B, Nick Swisher RF, Jorge Posada C, Curtis Granderson CF, Austin Kearns RF, Ramiro Pena 3B
LHP Andy Pettitte (11-2, 2.88 ERA)

balt3.gifORIOLES (58-90)
Brian Roberts 2B, Robert Andino 3B, Nick Markakis RF, Adam Jones CF, Jake Fox DH, Ty Wigginton 1B, Corey Patterson LF, Matt Wieters C, Cesar Izturis SS

RHP Chris Tillman (1-4, 6.32 ERA)

Been a Yankees fan probably longer than you’ve been alive robertgkramer. Not a sign of a champion when you can’t score in a situation like the top of the 11th. As you know, our team has done that repeatedly as of late.

You can blame this loss on Gerardi. To begin with, what is Berkman doing batting in the 3 hole? What has he done as a Yankee to justify that? Why not Swisher in the 3 hole and Berkman in either the 7 hole. Secondly, with one out in the top of the 11th and Golson on third and a 1-1 count on Pena, I do not understand pinch hitting Thames instead of Texeira. Who would you rather see swinging the bat, Thames or Tex? So Thames strikes out and that allows Schowalter to outmanage Gerardi by walking Texeira and Jeter and pitching to Berkman, batting right-handed with an under .200 BA. If Texeira pinch hits for Pena and they walk him, you pinch-hit Thames; but they won’t walk Tex in that situation. At least you get Tex swinging the bat instead of Thames.
