9/15 – Yankees at Rays

Hello from Tropicana Field as we wrap up this three-game showdown for first place in the American League East between the Rays and the Yankees.

The Yankees have a little extra bullpen help tonight, as Royce Ring was summoned to serve as the second lefty behind Boone Logan. Ring had already flown home to San Diego and had to jet to Florida today, but it was definitely a call he didn’t mind getting.
Joe Girardi also confirmed their pitching setup for this weekend; A.J. Burnett, CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte will go, in that order, against the Orioles in Baltimore. For the moment, it’s looking like both Javier Vazquez and Dustin Moseley will be bounced from starting jobs.
Updates for Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher – better, improving, still not starting. Gardner expects to be in the lineup Friday; Swisher will probably get a nod sometime this weekend.
YANKEES (88-57)
Derek Jeter SS, Curtis Granderson CF, Mark Teixeira 1B, Alex Rodriguez 3B, Robinson Cano 2B, Lance Berkman DH, Jorge Posada C, Austin Kearns LF, Colin Curtis RF

Tonight’s selection of official Yankees game information:

  • HANGING OUT UP TOP: The Yankees own the best record in Baseball at 88-57 (.607)…lead Tampa Bay by 0.5G in the AL East, marking the 50th consecutive day the two teams have been within 2.5 games of each other…are 31 games over .500, five games shy of their season high-water mark…took over first place in the AL East on 6/20 and have sat atop the division (tied or alone) all but two days since (1.0G back on 8/4 and 0.5G back on 9/14).

  • FROM ZEROES TO HEROES: With Tuesday’s 8-7 win at Tampa Bay, after getting shut out on Monday, 1-0, the Yankees are now 17-4 in games immediately following shutout losses since the start of the 2008 season, including an 12-3 mark in their last 15 such games since 8/2/08.

  • IN A PINCH: The Yankees collected their second pinch-hit homer of the season to win Tuesday at Tampa Bay (also Colin Curtis on 7/21 vs. Los Angeles-AL)…Posada’s solo HR in the 10th inning was his fifth career pinch-hit home run and second straight against Tampa Bay (also 9/9/09 off Grant Balfour)…was the Yankees’ first extra-inning PH homer since Matt Nokes’ 2-run HR on 5/8/93 in the 11th inning of a Yankees’ 10-8 win at Detroit.

  •  Was Posada’s fifth career extra-inning HR – all of which have come on the road…according to Elias, only three active players have more such homers: Jason Giambi, Carlos Pena and Albert Pujols – each with six.

  • MILESTONE MO: With his save in Tuesday’s win at Tampa Bay, RHP Mariano Rivera reached the 30-save plateau for the for the 13th time in his career (second most all time) and eighth straight season…according to the Elias Sports Bureau, only Trevor Hoffman (1995-2002) has as many consecutive 30-save seasons.

  • 2011 OUTLOOK: The Yankees are scheduled to open their 2011 season at home against Detroit on Thursday, 3/31…the Yankees will play 13 of their first 16 games and 20 of their first 28 at home…the Subway Series vs. the Mets will take place from 5/20-22 at Yankee Stadium and 7/1-3 in Queens…the Yankees will also host Interleague opponents Colorado (6/24-26) and Milwaukee (6/28-30) and travel to Chicago-NL (6/17-19) and Cincinnati (6/20-22)…the Yankees’ final five home games of the season will be vs. Tampa Bay (9/20-21) and Boston (9/23-25).

If anyone needs time off it is Girardi, about a month, before he screws up the yankees so bad that even the Cubs won’t want him. He did not win last year the team won in spite of him not because of him . I cannot believe the decisions made ithe Texas ,Tampa stretch Got good but limited performances from new comers but Kearns ,Thames, and Beckert stunk up the place . at least some of the young kids can run and throw. As a real old man that has spent his life as a yankee fan I cannot recall when i have been so dissapointed as the past 2 yrs. We are still in it but need better decisions from Management not including the Manager.Posada is not a defensive catcher any more , Positive and can hit yes.

For curiosity, I looked up how many games Kearns played in during 2008 and 2009. and found 86 and 80 respectively. So with 114 already in 2010 thats 28 more than 2008 and 34 more than 2009. He looks like he sorely needs a few days off!

I live in CA. I don’t wear shoes. I stand corrected. I take back my comment.
I have nothing positive to say about our beloved Yankees. This team sucks!

So I see where Joe has sent Vasquez back to the bullpen for the rest of the season. So Cashman you going to resign this bum again??? What a HUGE mistake, probably one the worse in Yankee History. After the signings/trade for/of the likes of Rick Rhoden, Ed Whitson, Jeff Weaver, Kevin Brown etc etc you would think this franchise would learn one simple lesson. Some guys CANNOT pitch in NYC. And why, in the case of Javy, give them a 2nd chance??? Cashman should have pedaled this guy at the trade deadline or have him clear waivers and say goodbye for good.

Don’t count out the REd Sox for the wild card. They’re only 6 games behind if the Yankees lose tonight.

1of5, You’re right, we have to look over our shoulders to watch the BoSox. If they get hot they could overtake us. We have the toughest of schedule ahead. Also look to the Central, The Twins are on a pace now to become the team with the best record in baseball, and they have the easiest schedule…. It appeared to me that Hughes was challenging Johnson, The 2nd homer was in thrown to almost the same spot as his 1st 4 bagger. I think that one was more Hughes than Joe, although I too believe Joe must GO.
Tex broke his toe the other night on the foul off his foot… Jeter remains a mystery! Again we failed to take advantage of the men on base we left a least 9 The Rays only one. They did there job we didn’t.
:Go Yankees!”

Great. The wonderful ARod strikes out to end the game. Another loss and the Rays are ahead again. It comes down to Girardi’s bad decision about Hughes leaving him too long. And Kearns getting 3 strike outs and leaving 6 men on base. I don’t think they should play Kearns again once Swisher and Gardner are back. He’s a liability. Well I don’t like the yankees chances down the stretch seeing who they’re going to have to play in comparison to the Rays. I think we’re in serious trouble.

If Kearns is in the line up Friday night, well, I just can’t believe he will be. Mariano Rivera can hit better than that.

I’ll ask it again. What the #ell is wrong with Jeter? He’s totally useless at the plate lately. His average is terrible for Jeter. He’s not reliable in the clutch any more. He hits into DPs. He strikes out. He can’t get runners in. If he doesn’t get it together and Tex has lost his power because of his toe then the Yankees are not going to make it. They’ll be lucky to sneak into the wild card position. The age of their players is finally catching up with them. They haven’t been able to develop their younger players and they gave away Jackson to the Tigers who was their best hitting and fielding prospect in the organization. What really lost this game tonight was Girardi leaving Hughes in one batter too long. It happened last night and too many times this year. And he never admits he made a mistake. it’s always blah, blah, blah after the game.

Once again oneof5 I go back to the offseason and the STUPID moves made by Cashman as to the reasons this team has struggled. ALL teams have injuries BUT Cashman moves injured this team. The additions (?) of Johnson and Vasquez were BAD decisions. In big series the Yankees threw a rookie and a journeyman because Javy CANNOT pitch worth a *amn. Berkman & Kearns are added because Nick, I AM ALWAYS INJURED, Johnson has been on welfare all year. My dad always said if it ain’t broke don’t tinker with it. Toooooo bad Cashman didn’t follow that advice.

How many *ucking times does Kearns have to strike out in this series B4 Bonehead Joe gets him out of the lineup?

The Yankees have a very weak lineup again tonight with Swisher and Gardner out. Guys like Curtis aren’t ready for the big league. They can’t hit. I think I’d rather take my chances with Pena or Golson than Curtis. Now they have one more inning to win this thing and the way they’re hitting tonight I doubt they’re going to be able to get a run against the Ray’s closer, so the Rays are in the lead again. That’s my prediction. I’m not sure if the Yankees can beat the O’s the way they’re playing right now and the way the O’s have been playing. That’s not an easy series to split even let along win. And then the Yankees have Boston and Tampa Bay and the Blue Jays to contend with down the stretch. Tampa has easier series so I don’t like the yankees chances of winning the division.

Sorry, but right now I don’t like Kearns or Berkman or Thames at the plate. They get a few hits but never at the right time. Berkman with bases loaded hits into a double play. Kearns strikes out too much. And Thames after he hit those home runs in consecutive games has done nothing and again tonight strikes out. I don’t think any of them were a good pick up and we gave up too much for them. They’re not producing and they are too old and are “has beens” if they ever were. The Yankees have got to commit to some of their young guys or trade in the off season for some good hitters. There don’t seem to be any power hitters in the system ready for the big league. If Texiera has a broken toe and has not any home runs in the last several games the Yankees are lacking in power down the stretch. they haven’t got the reliable starting pitching other than CC so need some power numbers and runs.

There is something going on in the mind of Joe Girardi. I don’t know if this guy has checked out and is thinking about the Cub job or what. NO ONE could be this STUPID on a nightly basis. Leaving Hughes in is absolutely STUPID!!

Like

Doesn’t make sense to me that with Hughes beginning to tire and over 100 pitches that Girardi would leave him in against a guy that had homered off him previously. Again bad decision by the manager leaving a pitcher in too long. He should have gone to the bull pen before Johnson. A guy with his batting average and only 4 home runs all season hits 2 tonight off Hughes. Inexcusable when you have a good bull pen like the Yankees have had this year. Better to walk a guy who has hit a home run off you already than pitch to him and allow him to hit another one. If the yankees lose this one another bad decision by the manager in leaving a starter in a batter or two too long.

Been a fan since the 60s. Never been more disheartened than tonight and last night when Kearns and Curtis are at bat. Kearns striking out weakly, 80 percent of the time. And Curtis lofting soft fly balls to the outfield.

Frank,
And I just learned last night that Teixeira’s been playing with a painful broken toe since 8/31. Big difference in the health and play by the team from September 2009. I liked your mention of our September 2000 results!
