Posada out with concussion symptoms
There was a prime spot for Jorge Posada to pinch-hit today in the seventh inning, with Francisco Cervelli’s spot in the order due up and Chad Moeller available to catch if needed. But Posada wasn’t used, and there was a good reason why.
Joe Girardi said after the game that Posada complained of concussion symptoms last night, saying he was somewhat foggy having taken a foul tip early in the game. After he didn’t sleep well last night and came to the Stadium with a headache, Posada underwent tests here before being sent to a neurologist in Manhattan.
“Any time you start talking about concussions, and we’ve seen a lot of
these last a long time in players, there is concern,” Girardi said.
The Yankees are waiting on those test results, but at this time it is unclear if Posada will be able to travel with the team to Texas. Their flight leaves New York tomorrow night, and it would seem prudent for the Yankees to handle this cautiously.
“It all depends on what the doctor says. If the tests come back OK, then we’ll probably take him with us. If the tests don’t, I’m not sure what you do,” Girardi said.
Here was the update from the Yankees last night: “Tests performed this afternoon by a neurology specialist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital were negative. Physicians have cleared Posada for competitive play and he is listed as day-to-day.”
