8/31 – Yankees vs. Athletics

Here are tonight’s lineups for game two of this four-game series against the A’s:

ATHLETICS (65-65)
Coco Crisp CF, Daric Barton 1B, Kurt Suzuki C, Jack Cust DH, Kevin Kouzmanoff 3B, Mark Ellis 2B, Jeff Larish LF, Rajai Davis RF, Cliff Pennington SS
Vin Mazzaro RHP (6-6, 3.61 ERA)

YANKEES (81-50)
Brett Gardner LF, Derek Jeter SS, Mark Teixeira 1B, Robinson Cano 2B, Nick Swisher RF, Jorge Posada C, Marcus Thames DH, Curtis Granderson CF, Ramiro Pena 3B
Phil Hughes RHP (15-6, 4.12 ERA)

This and that: Joe Girardi said the Yankees haven’t yet discussed moving Javier Vazquez back into the rotation, but that was largely because Girardi hasn’t spoken to Brian Cashman today. “We haven’t made any changes,” he said. “Right now, we’re on schedule.” … It is possible the Yankees will have call-ups tomorrow when the rosters expand, but those haven’t been finalized. “It’s something I’ll talk about with Cash tonight. We could possibly add a few. We haven’t etched anything in stone right now. We could also add zero,” Girardi said….

Lance Berkman’s activation seems likely, though, barring a setback tonight at Double-A Trenton. Alfredo Aceves is also a possibility. An extra outfielder and infielder seem like things they’d look for. … There is no timetable for Damaso Marte to resume throwing.

Pena is adequate at third but is a weak hitter. We need ARod back hopefully by Sunday, then hope he’s in good form and doesn’t take too long to get back into game shape and hitting at a high level. We need his bat down the stretch.

Hughes is beating himself tonight again. Falling behind hitters all game. Walking too many. CAn’t locate his pitches. Too many pitches. Fortunately he’s not further behind than he is. He is not the pitcher he was early in the year. Getting tired? When Pettitte comes back it will give them more options as starter. Yankees need this one tonight because it’s likely they’ll lose tomorrow with AJ on the mound. You can almost predict now the outcome of AJ’s games. Personally I don’t think he should be starting. He just hasn’t been consistent all year. I’m more confidence in Nova and Moseley right now than AJ.

Thankfully a DP because Hughes already had 22 pitches which means if he throws this many pitches over 3 innings he will be close to 70 pitches after 3 innings. Hopefully he’ll cut down on the pitches in the next couple of innings or it could be a short night.

Idon’t like the way Hughes is starting this game. Last game he was close to a 100 pitches after 3 innings and if he pitches this many pitches to every batter it will be the same tonight. He can’t finish them off without a lot of foul balls and running then count up. Hopefully he can put in at least 5 innings without giving up very many runs and then the Yankees will have to rev up their offence again to put another game in the win column to try to get some space between them and the RAys. I wouldn’t think the Rays would win back to back against the Jays but who knows?
