8/29 – Yankees at White Sox

It’s Frank Thomas Day in Chicago, with the former White Sox slugger getting his number retired in a pregame ceremony. The Yankees will look to put a big hurt on the Pale Hose, though, and take the rubber game of this three-game set and salvage a 3-3 road trip before heading home for 10.
Ivan Nova is on the hill, and Mark Teixeira was scratched because of that bone bruise on his right thumb. Nick Swisher is at first with Austin Kearns filling in in right.

Though Kearns has no hits in his last four games still got on base four times and sits right at his career .353 OBP. He is a far, far better choice defensively than Thames and every fan I know criticized Girardi for using Marcus in the field earlier this year. The cost for Kearns was one mediocre pitching prospect whose stock had fallen to third best at AAA and had several arms at lower levels ahead of him too.

Jeter just doesn?t have the power numbers to be moved to the five or six slot. We did check his stats last year in the three slot and, if I remember correctly, he has a career .368 BA there. One down year likely will not prevent us signing him again and the fans will revolt if we don?t. As far as moving him to another team, as a ten and five man, he can veto any trade, and I can?t see the fans allowing that either. He will gracefully retire as a Yankee when he feels he can no longer produce. He has earned that kind of respect.

2 out of 3 against White Sox in Chicago is good for a limping team. Need a 9-1 or 8-2 homestand. Get AROD back, Tex back, Pettite ready to pitch, Berkman healthy, and maybe the Captain gets hot. Maybe even Burnett strings together a few good outings. That’s a bunch to hope for, but its worth thinking its going to happen. Joba hit 99 on radar gun today—–haven’t seen that in a few years. Also Javier V. work out of bullpen, although in a losing effort was good on road trip. Wood is looking like a very good deal. Maybe the cool of September will reinvigorate team. Tough schedule in September after this homestand—-need to get it done in next 10 games.

This game today is of note to Vasquez & Burnett. You both saw how a major league starter pitches in a pennant race today. If neither of you two can get your act together than once Andy gets back into the rotation you are BOTH headed to bullpen duty. Whether or not either of you decides to get it together is your choice. Girardi NEEDS to move on with Nova & Moseley down the stretch.

If not for the pitch hit appearance in the 9th inning the other night, Thames has hit a HR in each of his last four games. A couple of years back he hit 6 HR in straight 6 games until DUMBROWSKI took him out of the lineup. Not saying Marcus could repeat this but he is hot and when he is watch out. Nice to see him get in regular at bats in 4 of last 5 games. Yankees need to get their ‘superstars’ going but it is nice to see TEAM wins, says something about the boys on the bench.

Jeter fails to come through again to get the RISP home. He is playing way below what we’re used to for Jeter which makes me think either he’s now well past his prime and needs to be traded or he’s injured and trying to play through it.

Gardner just can’t bunt his way on base or Girardi won’t let him. He’s got to develop this part of his game as a lead off man or he’s going to limit his value to the club.

Other than Thames,no pop in this lineup today. Pretty enemic offence. Hope we don’t have to go with this lineup for too much longer.

Sorry, don’t like Kearns. I’ve said it before. Bases loaded and grounds into a force out. He can’t get it done at the plate. Unfortunately they don’t have anyone on the bench to pinch hit through I would think they could have used Posada but then had noone to put into the outfield? An opportunity missed. They gave up too much in the way of prospects to get Kearns I think.

Like

Now he strikes out again in addition to a DP. There is something desperately wrong with Jeter this year. He’s either getting older and not able to hit like he used to. I don’t think he was on steroids but he’s hitting like it. Or he’s injured and not telling management and trying to play through it. Anyone with better info than I have? If it was anyone else but Jeter who is Mr. Yankee he wouldn’t be signed as a free agent based on this year’s performance. But he probably will be just to keep him in the organization. No good to put him in the outfield because he’s not really getting it done at the plate. Personally I think the Yankees should cut the ties and let him go and finish up somewhere else or trade him while there is still good market value.

Like

Sorry, but Jeter is not getting it done. He strikes out too much and hits into too many DPs. He’s not a hitter they can rely on any more. I think they should think of putting someone else in the #2 slot and move Jeter down to 5 or 6 in the batting order based on his average to date and the fact he just isn’t getting on base or moving runners forward.

Like

/What do you know Gardner strikes out? He strikes out way too much for a #1 hitter. He needs to get on base and use his speed. Someone has to teach him how to bunt his way on. Take some lessons from Pierre who is out for an hour before every game practicing his bunts down each line. Gardner needs to have that option in his bag as well. He’s not much use to the Yankees if he doesn’t get on base.

No Tex. No ARod. No Posada. Man it’s a weakened lineup today. It will be up to Nova, a rookie, pitching his second big league game to hold the hard hitting White Sox to a minimum of runs as I don’t think the yankees are going to be piling up runs today like they did last night. Usually they follow a game where they score a lot with a game where they can’t hit and score few runs. Interesting to see if this game today follows that pattern.

Without Tex and ARod the Yankees have lost a lot of pop in the lineup. Whether the other guys can come up with some runs is the big question. How many games do you expect the backups and the rookies to keep coming up b ig? Actually I’m not too impressed with Kearns. He seems to be slow swinging at pitches and often undercuts the ball and pops it up or fouls it off. He’s average in the field. Not sure if Berkman is the answer once he gets back. Perhaps Thames can then play in the outfield and Berkman can DH. The way Thames has been hitting lately he’s a better bet than Kearns.
