Posada sits with irritated shoulder

Yankees catcher Jorge Posada was not available to play Tuesday with irritation in his right shoulder.

Manager Joe Girardi said after the Yankees’ 4-3, 10-inning loss to the Rangers that he stayed away from using Posada, who reported some discomfort after making a throw on Monday in New York.

“He told me the throw he made yesterday irritated his shoulder a little bit,” Girardi said. “I don’t think it’s anything serious, but I’ve got to be careful. When Jorgie tells you something is irritated, it’s usually irritated.”

Girardi was tempted to use Posada in the eighth inning, as the Yankees had the go-ahead run on base with one out and backup Francisco Cervelli coming up.

But Girardi said Posada’s shoulder, as well as his 1-for-10 career numbers with five strikeouts against Texas reliever Frank Francisco, kept Posada on the bench as Cervelli popped out weakly to first base.

Girardi said that he would have been able to use Posada in an emergency and it is possible Posada could play Wednesday.

“I’m hoping just the one day off and he’s fine,” Girardi said. “We’ll have to check with him [Wednesday]. We thought about using him, but you have to think about it. When Jorgie says something, he feels it. He’s had trouble off [Francisco]. I chose not to do it.”

What is wrong with this pathetic team? I know it’s impossible to win every game but, this team pretty much needs to. Today we have Vasquez vs Lee. Chalk up another loss for the good guys.

Let’s face it, Posada is just a shell of what he used to be and his days behind the plate are over. He is a DH and a DH ONLY. The Yankees need to address this immediately. Cervelli is a great backup but is not an everyday catcher. Let’s give Jesus a shot now. Let’s see what the kid has. At least we’ll know if we have to shop for a catcher in the off season. Posada behind the plate in the playoffs will not cut it as was demonstrated by the Bosox’s Ellsbury on Monday and Cervelli doesn’t hit enough. We need a #! catcher…period.
