8/9 – Yankees vs. Red Sox

It’s a steamy summer afternoon in the Bronx as the Yankees wrap up this four-game series against the Red Sox, an unorthodox 2:05 p.m. ET start time. First pitch sailed in from Phil Hughes with the temperature reading a muggy 92 degrees.

It’s a getaway day matinee. After this game, the Yankees board their charter flight for a road trip that will take them to Texas for two games and Kansas City for four.
Here are this afternoon’s lineups:
RED SOX (63-49)
Marco Scutaro SS, J.D. Drew RF, Victor Martinez C, David Ortiz DH, Adrian Beltre 3B, Mike Lowell 1B, Ryan Kalish LF, Bill Hall 2B, Jacoby Ellsbury CF.
Jon Lester LHP (11-7, 3.07 ERA)

YANKEES (69-41)
Derek Jeter SS, Nick Swisher RF, Mark Teixeira 1B, Alex Rodriguez 3B, Robinson Cano 2B, Jorge Posada C, Marcus Thames DH, Austin Kearns LF, Curtis Granderson CF.
Phil Hughes RHP (13-4, 3.96 ERA)

Granderson should not have come to bat the last two times…especially against the lefty. His strikeout ratio must be staggering. He could not hit lefties in the past and is just an above average outfielder…..not the Yankee mold. He tries to pull everything and the league knows it. Come on Joe…..it’s time for a platoon in center, at best.

Pabelbon strikes out the side. How #amn poor is that. This game wasn’t lost in the 9th. It was lost earlier in the game when good opportunites to tie and take the lead were squandered. Lester wasn’t that great today. the Yankees offence just couldn’t get it going when they needed to. So now they kept the Sox in a solid place in the standings and they can make up 6 games in a hurry especially if they get their injured guys back. Not a well managed game today and poor offence. Girardi doesn’t seem to want to play small ball. With the bases loaded you want to move guys along with a bunt or whatever so you don’t leave guys stranded while the hitters are trying to get the big hit and drive in multi runs. There are times when the bunt is the best alternative especially when you have a left handed pitcher against a lefty hitter who can’t hit lefties. When you are down 1 run in the late innings you do whatever you have to do to pick up a run or two knowing that it’s a low scoring game and it will only a take a run or two to win it. Anyway, another loss. very disappointing! That’s the difference between a national league team and an American league team and manager.

Granderson is friggin useless. A great strike out artist. he gets the odd hit but he strikes out way too much and is not producing like he should be for what they’re paying him and what we gave up for him. He not only strikes out with lefties but righties as well. The Yankees didn’t get it done with Lester when they had the chance or Bard and now they’ve got to deal with Pablebon so they’ve lost one here they should have won. A split is not good enough against a banged up team like the Sox.

A game of missed opportunites offensively for the Yankees. Hughes wasn’t that great but only gave up 2 runs. You don’t win many games only getting 1 run. Bases loaded and no outs and you don’t get one run? There’s the game right there.

Can you believe it? Bases loaded and no outs and they couldn’t get a run. Man, what’s up with that? They can’t get anything going offensively today at all. A split is alright but much better to go out of this series up 8 games than 6. Once the Sox get their injured players back they’re going to be tough down the stretch. When you got the foot on the jugular you have to press hard.

What’s drastically wrong is that Giradi has no idea how to manage outside of “his book.” Granderson, with his
‘left hander problems” and his speed, and the fact that Lester is coming off the mound toward the 3rd side, should have just bunted to the right side. And, if Jeter also bunted, I think that the game would be tied with Swish up looking for a hit to take the lead, instead of looking to drive in 2 just to tie it.

When you have lemons, you make lemonade. Granderson against a lefty in that situation, is a lemon.

Tough to miss opps like that, Joe.

Bases loaded with no outs and Granderson hitting against a lefty? Girardi should have pinch hit for him. He’s useless swinging against a left handed pitcher. He looks really lost, flailing away missing by a mile. The yankees need to capitalize here on a bases loaded situation and not blow it. Runs are awfully hard to come by so far today. If they can’t get a run with the bases loaded and no outs there’s something drastically wrong.

TOTALLY agree with the guys on the YES Network, if you put Gardner in for AROD why the *ELL isn’t he stealing before the 6th pitch? I mean what is the purpose of replacing one of your big bats with speed & then the speedster does NOT use his speed? I don’t disagree with the move, I just wonder what the *ELL Gardner was doing? GREAT play by Pena to end the top of the 9th.

Moseley pitched a heck of a game last night. Thank God Burnett was scratched because he would’ve had his you know what handed to him just like Vasquez did. How bad is the bullpen when a team is up by 5 runs & the coach brings in the closer? He better hope there’s no save situation today. You have to know that Hughes is going to get beat by Lester today.

Even with the CHEAP hits today, Hughes is absolutely terrible today. 52 pitches in 1 and 2/3 innings is garbage. He is all over the place.
