The big news of the day is that Alex Rodriguez was clipped by a Lance Berkman line drive during batting practice this afternoon and has been scratched from the Yankees lineup with what the team is calling a lower left leg contusion, near the base of his shin.
THE CAPTAIN MARCHES ON: SS Derek Jeter went 1-for-3 in Friday’s loss vs. Boston, tying Babe Ruth (2,873) for 39th place on Baseball’s all-time hits list. …Has scored at least one run in seven of his last eight games, including 8R combined over his last four games.
OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT: The Yankees have hit a two-run home run in each of their last four games and five of their last seven contests…according to the Elias Sports Bureau, the four-game streak with a first-inning homer coming with at least one runner on base is the longest such streak in team history and the longest by any Major League team since Colorado in August 1995…have scored in the first inning in nine of their last 11 home games…the Yankees are 38-13 this season when scoring the game’s first run.
CREATURE OF COMFORT: LHP CC Sabathia is undefeated in his last 17 starts at Yankee Stadium – dating back to the 2009 All-Star break, posting a 12-0 record with a 2.25 ERA (120.0IP, 30ER) and a .207 opponents batting average (89-for-429)…the Yankees have gone 15-2 in those starts. …With a 149-86 career mark (.634), is looking for his 150th career win today…according to the Elias Sports Bureau, only three active pitchers have reached the plateau with fewer losses than Sabathia currently owns (Roy Halladay was 150-76, Tim Hudson was 150-79, and Andy Pettitte was 150-79).
SIGN ‘EM UP: The Yankees have signed three additional players from the 2010 First-Year Player Draft: RHP Thomas Kahnle (fifth round), C Christopher Austin (13th round) and LHP Kramer Sneed (32nd round)…the Yankees have now signed 18 player from their 2010 daft class, including 12 of the
top 24 selections and No. 1 pick SS Cito Culver out of Irondequoit High School in Rochester, N.Y…Monday, 8/16 is the signing deadline.
