8/1 – Yankees at Rays

Thumbnail image for 073110cano.jpgAnd a happy August to you from under the sloping domed roof of Tropicana Field, where there are supposed to be thunderstorms in the forecast. Pay no attention – we’ll have uninterrupted baseball here in the climate controlled conditions.
The Rays are wearing their funky baby blue jerseys. The Yankees are wearing gray jerseys with ‘NEW YORK’ across the front. You know, the ones they wear every single day on the road.
Speaking of funky, want a cool stat? In Saturday’s victory, all six of the Yankees’ hits were for extra bases (three doubles, three homers). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked just the fourth time in franchise history the Yankees have registered at least six hits in a game and had them all go for extra bases. It also happened June 20, 1971 vs. Baltimore, June 21, 1992 vs. Baltimore and July 9, 1994 vs. the Angels.
While we get set to see some ball, here’s one last note from CC Sabathia’s people — they have completely redesigned each of Sabathia’s Web sites at CCSabathia52.comand PitCChinfoundation.org. Definitely pop over and give them a look today.
Here are this afternoon’s lineups:
YANKEES (66-37)
Derek Jeter SS, Lance Berkman 1B, Mark Teixeira DH, Robinson Cano 2B, Nick Swisher RF, Jorge Posada C, Curtis Granderson CF, Austin Kearns LF, Ramiro Pena 3B
LHP CC Sabathia (13-4, 3.15)

RAYS (64-39)
B.J. Upton CF, Carl Crawford LF, Evan Longoria 3B, Willy Aybar DH, Sean Rodriguez 1B, Jason Bartlett SS, Kelly Shoppach C, Gabe Kapler RF, Reid Brignac 2B
RHP James Shields (9-9, 4.79)

REAL TIME POST OUT OF ORDER:
The “new” guys need to have a little winning attitude rub off on them on the two hour plane ride to New York!

Bummer!

Totallyuseless offence today by the Yankees. Not desperate enough for a win today? Happy to get out with one win in the series? Not a good performance by starting pitching or offence.

Great performance by Shields!

CC needed to be dominate today. Instead Shields is.

Boston wins it in the bottom of the 9th, so they’re not going away either with all of their injuries. The Yankees have no injuries to use as an excuse, very few anyway.

Do you put a new pitcher who has just come to the team into the 8th inning in a battle for first place in the division and down 3 runs? I wouldn’t think so.

Like

Wood puts the first man on base with 4 straight balls. That’s not the way to win a game.

Like

Berkman isn’t doing much since he arrived. I guess we can’t expect too much too soon, but maybe he shouldn’t be in the lineup until he gets adjusted to a new team and new league. We’re running out of time here.

Grandy big K, He too is not hitting…Kearns (Ks) also for 8th in a row for Shields.. Only 2 hits … Lets get going!!!! ………

CCSabathia52.comand PitCChinfoundation.org… How about them redesigning CC he’s been terrible, certainly not pitching like a number 1. Even Javy is doing a better job.. Yesterday was a fluke 6 hits, 3 doubles & 3 HRs.. When does this team start getting the hits that drive in runs?? Men on base?, forget it let them get heat stroke waiting to be driven home. Tex is SOing too much especially when all we need is a fly ball, or a ground ball against the shift. Come on lets get some hits & runs…..

What’s with A Rod? Strikes out way too much and particularly since he’s been trying to hit home run #600. He’s late on swings. He’s hitting under the ball. He’s swinging at bad pitches. He’s a desperate man and the more desperate he gets the worse he is. He can say all the right things about wanting to bunt or single or get hit by a pitch to help his team win but in reality he’s trying too hard for the big hit every time he’s at the plate. Right now he isn’t helping the team very much.

We need #600 now!

CC’s pitch count not good today. Shield’s count is much better. Too many balls. Not his sharpest and of course the offence is letting him down up to this point. I think the Yankees are going to be battling the Rays right down to the wire. They’ve got less than half of the Yankees pay roll but have a good team and are keeping pace with the Yankees all the way. The Yankees in spite of a great record can’t shake the Rays off. There’s no quit in their game and they play a creative, more of a national league team style than american. yet they have some good power. A well managed club.

That chemistry comment is a good one! It will take a few days for the new guys to blend in.

I know Shields is a pretty good pitcher but all the Yankee hitters are doing is flailing away at the ball with strikeout after strikeout. What’s going on? Is Shields that good? Or are the Yankee hitters that bad? They should know Shields by know and go up to the plate with a plan.

Like

I wonder if inserting new guys into the lineup and sending down guys who have been up for a while and part of the team won’t hurt them until the chemistry begins to come together. It’s going to be a challenge for Girardi to give them all playing time particularly having traded for a couple of veterans. There’ll be fewer opportunities to groom the young prospects and give them an opportunity to develop. They’ve got a surplus of outfielders now that will mean a mix and match every game and little chance for consistency or confidence. I thought Berkman was brought in as a DH.

Robert: There seems to be very few keeping this blog site alive any more. Obviously CC is not off to a great start and the Yankees offence has got off with a whimper again. Hopefully their bats will heat up as the game goes on. They don’t want to lose the series to the Rays and be only 1 game up. Can understand why A Rod needed a rest from all the hype but not a good game to rest in, the last in a series with the Rays fighting for first place. Better the first game with the Jays perhaps. The yankees need all the offence they can get tonight obviously.
